Package: gcj-4.2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

The man pages gc-analyze-4.2.1, gcj-4.2.1, jcf-dump-4.2.1 and jv-convert-4.2.1
are all licensed under the GNU Fre Documentation License with front- and
back-cover texts. According to Debian vote 1 of 2006 this is a violation of the
DFSG modifiability requirements.

The man pages are fairly short (with the possible exception of gcj) which should
facilitate writing fresh ones complying with the DFSG. As I primarily use C++/C
I'm probably not the best person for the job. I would however be willing to have
a go at it, if so requested.

Other non-free man pages in packages related to the GNU Compiler Collection:
  * cpp-4.2 (bug #456262)
  * gcc-4.2 (bug #442445)
  * gcj (bug #456264)
  * gij-4.2 (bug report not yet submitted)

Note: In response to bug #442445 Matthias Klose said that the problem won't
  be fixed (for gcc) until the 4.2.3 and 4.3.0 releases.

Package: gij-4.2
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.2.1

The man pages gcj-dbtool-4.2.1 and gij-4.2.1 are both licensed under the GNU Fre
Documentation License with front- and back-cover texts. According to Debian vote
1 of 2006 this is a violation of the DFSG modifiability requirements.

Both man pages are fairly short so it shouldn't be too much work writing fresh
ones to comply with the DFSG. As I primarily use C++/C I'm probably not the best
person for the job. I would however be willing to have a go at it, if so
requested.

Other non-free man pages in packages related to the GNU Compiler Collection:
  * cpp-4.2 (bug #456262)
  * gcc-4.2 (bug #442445)
  * gcj (bug #456264)
  * gij-4.2 (bug #456265)

Note: In response to bug #442445 Matthias Klose said that the problem won't
  be fixed (for gcc) until the 4.2.3 and 4.3.0 releases.

the patch file debian/patches/libobjc.dpatch has an assumption that you
have the the gc header files installed. the code snippet below shows how
it should be (i.e. using the headers from the source package). hope this
helps :)

When I try to bootstrap gcc trunk on mips with gcc-4.2, the fails

% cat > t.c << EOF

foo:
rep ; ret
.size   foo, .-foo
.ident "GCC: (GNU) 4.2.1 (Debian 4.2.1-5)"
.section.note.GNU-stack,"",@progbits

As far as I know, there are two acceptable behaviours for function foo():
  - loop indefinitely (if tail recursion is used)
  - overflow the stack (if tail recursion is not used)

As soon as -O is used on x86-32, GCC generates code that just returns
("rep ; ret").

Note that the bug is also present with the following Ada program:

procedure U
begin
   U;
end U;

although the Ada front-end warns about a possibly infinite recursion. The
very same code gets generated.

This may be platform-specific and generates bogus code with any non-O0
optimization level.

2008-02-02 Thread Matthias Klose
reassign 462501 postgresql-pljava
thanks

bad call. postgresql-pljava has to cope with situations where gcc
version != gcj version. you already use I/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/include
so you should use -L/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/lib as well.

Package: gcc-4.3
Version: 4.3-20080127-1
Severity: important

The attached code, coming from the GNU libc (test-ifloat.c and
s_cacoshf.c) gives wrong results when compiled with gcc-4.3 and -O3. The
results are correct with gcc-4.3 and lower optimisation or with gcc-4.2.

the patch file debian/patches/libobjc.dpatch has an assumption that you
have the the gc header files installed. the code snippet below shows how
it should be (i.e. using the headers from the source package). hope this
helps :)

Hi,
gcc emits a warning that should not be there probably.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/inline$ cat inline.c

extern inline char func( int arg )
{
  static const char foomap[4] = {2, 4, 8, 16};

  return foomap[arg & 3];
}
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/inline$ gcc -c -Wall inline.c
inline.c: In function 'func':
inline.c:4: warning: 'foomap' is static but declared in inline function 'func'
which is not static
inline.c:6: warning: 'foomap' is static but used in inline function 'func'
which is not static

|
| Yes, from the link Bernd provided the warning is emitted basically
| for anything that uses the static keyword. The above is correct
| though, IMO, as is:
|
| extern inline char func( int arg )
|  {
|static const char foomap[] = "abc";
|
|return foomap[arg & 3];
|  }
|
| > I have red several times the ISO paragraph :). It seems to me, that
| > paragraph applies to this situation.
| > IMHO foomap is `reference to an identifier with internal linkage'.
| > Or no? :)
|
| From ISO 9899:1999 6.2.2 Linkages of identifiers:
|
|  #1
| An identifier declared in different scopes or in the same scope more
| than once can be made to refer to the same object or function by a
| process called linkage. There are three kinds of linkage: external,
| internal, and none.
|
|  #2
| If the declaration of a file scope identifier for an object or a
| function contains the storage-class specifier static, the identifier
| has internal linkage.
| [...]
|  #6
| The following identifiers have no linkage: an identifier declared to
| be anything other than an object or a function; an identifier declared
| to be a function parameter; a block scope identifier for an object
| declared without the storage-class specifier extern.
|
| ...from that #2 doesn't apply because the identifier isn't at file
| scope, and so the last part of #6 does apply.
|
| Also it's "well known" that in:
|
| void foobar(void)
| {
|   const char *const foo   = "abcd";
|   static const char bar[] = "abcd";
| }
|
| ...foo and bar do the same thing, point to some constant data, but bar
| is the better version.
| As with foo you have a allocated two objects (the pointer being the
| second object), and have to use/manage them both, but with bar you
| have just "named" a single object.
