Bug#307625: gcc-3.4: ftbfs [sparc] ldd on `debian/lib64gcc1/lib64/libgcc_s.so.1' gave error exit status 1

2005-05-04 Thread Blars Blarson
Package: gcc-3.4
Version: 3.4.3-12.1
Severity: serious

Justification: fails to build from source

gcc-3.4 failed to build from source on the sparc buildd. The ldd
error looks like it may be a known kernel bug fixed in current sarge
kernels on sparc, but not yet on vore.

Bug#301064: gcc-3.4 build failure on hurd-i386

2005-05-04 Thread Michael Banck
Hi,

According to ftp.debian.org, it appears to be 3.4.1-7, though I do not
remember exactly.

No, at least not out of the box. libffi needs to get disabled (it
claims to not having been ported yet), and I think there was some other
issue (perhaps just some additional Build-Depends not available).

Anyway, back to the gcc-3.4 build log:

I see now: /include appears to be hard-coded as the sole system include
search path for *-gnu-*, while my system has a real /usr and thus no
/include directory. If I link /usr/include to /, it builds fine (well
crtbegin.o at least).

Debian GNU/Hurd is (currently) trying to support both a real /usr and a
/usr->. symlink (the install CDs make a symlink, but crosshurd users can
choose), so I wonder what the right fix is, perhaps remove whatever
special policy enforcement there is for /include for Debian only?

What do the other Hurd porters think?

cheers,

Michael

If /usr is a symlink to / and gcc uses /usr/include, it will work.
If /usr is a real directory and gcc uses /usr/include, it will work as well.

So, if gcc is going to use a single directory as the include path, I think
it should (still) be /usr/include, at least on Debian.

I think we have never been ready to have /usr as a symlink to / on a
development machine. Two examples:

* dpkg-shlibdeps needs to be patched and the build logs are full of
ugly junk when debian/rules reaches dh_shlibdeps.

* The last libtool that was build on a system in which /usr was a
symlink had sed hardcoded as /usr/bin/sed (because it was "detected"
to be there, due to the symlink), and therefore it was horribly broken
on a system where /usr was a real directory.

Because of the risk of things like this happening, I consider a system
where /usr is a symlink completely inapropriate for building packages,
as those packages might only work on a system where /usr is also a symlink.

I was able to build und use gcc-3_4-branch (last month or so).
The only problem was (and still is) that _statically_ linked executables
are segfaulting immediatelly.
I was not yet able to debug that; parhaps it's related to the combination
of binutils, glibc and gcc.

Yes, that is done in gcc/config/t-gnu.
#v+
# In GNU, "/usr" is a four-letter word.
NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR = /include
#v-

I just set $NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR to the directory containing glibc's
header files to make the build work.

 Thomas

Hmm, I did no know about that. Thanks.

What versions of binutils and glibc did you use? The ones from
unstable?

Actually, this is what Debian does already (hurd-changes.dpatch changes
it to /usr/include); however, it seems the other headers in gcc/config/
have been shuffled around between gcc-3.3 and gcc-3.4, and
gcc/config/gnu.h now has a mention of /include as well. Adding the
following patch to hurd-changes appears to work fine:

--- gcc/config/gnu.h.orig 2005-05-04 18:14:48.0 +0200
+++ gcc/config/gnu.h2005-05-04 18:16:29.0 +0200

Again, this should be a Debian-specific change for now.

Or just hard code it on Debian to /usr/include, even if that is
stupid.

2005-05-04 Thread Alfred M. Szmidt
How about making gcc's configure test smart so that when you do
"--prefix=" (the normal way to configure any program for the GNU
system) it looks for headers in /include /local, and if you do
--prefix=/usr (as Debian does) it would look for the files in
/usr/include /usr/local?

This is the right thing IMHO, it removes the hardcoded bit and makes
it work as it should on both GNU and Debian GNU/Hurd (and GNU/Linux
for that matter).

I guess a simple patch would be to have the file that contains the
/include bit to be autogenerated based on $includedir from autoconf.

2005-05-04 Thread Alfred M. Szmidt
If /usr is a symlink to / and gcc uses /usr/include, it will work.
If /usr is a real directory and gcc uses /usr/include, it will work as well.

And if /usr doesn't exist, it will not work at all. Hard coding is
just bad, period.

   # In GNU, "/usr" is a four-letter word.
   NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR = /include

I think that just changing NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR to:

NATIVE_SYSTEM_HEADER_DIR = $(prefix)/include

would fix all problems, could someone with a GNU/Hurd system check
that? It would kinda break stuff for people who install gcc in
{/usr,/}local though...

I submitted a patch for this some time ago (and it should also solve
other troubles with x86_64), but it doesn't seem merged yet.

Hi John,

I just installed this package myself in an i386 system and it works fine.
