At least, the testcase I had distilled from QT works and the smallest testcase
in this PR doesn't create an endless loop anymore.

a stack-protector patch is included (but not applied) in
debian/patches. I'll do the same with stackguard, if you send me a
working patch.

If this is something that would have no effect except when enabled by
a compile time switch then I'd appreciate it if it was actually applied.
It could encourage package maintainers to build with it.
