Sorry about that. I wasn't sure about the level of detail an ITP should

The package will end up in non-free, unfortunately. While the parts of
the module written by The PHP Group are licensed under the PHP License,
some of it is based on older code.

Relevant part of the copyright file, with comments by the last

Package verification and "/usr/bin/install" tool replacements

2003-10-03 Thread Kim Lester
Although debian packages may contain md5sums it seems package
verification is
not available (unless I have missed something).

Also I find the traditional /usr/bin/install type tools rather
primitive.

As I understand it a debian pkg relies on information in the tar
archive itself
to store this information.

I had need for both a package verification tool (including minor repair
abilities)
as well as the ability to verify/fix file/dir/link user/goup IDs and
modes.
I have developed a pkg system which meets my needs and it happens to be
very similar to the debian system. I would like to move to a debian pkg
system
but I want to introduce the tools and features of my system.

Some of the ideas I have implemented include a "pkg info" file in each
package
containing the
	pathname
	uid, gid (numeric)
	md5sum,
	size (useful to humans)
	mode
	symlink target (for symlinks)

a pkgverify command can be run on an installed package and the contents
of this
pkginfo file are used to ensure the pkg is installed correctly. The
tool can also optionally
correct missing/broken dirs, symlinks as well as uid, ,gid, mode info.

The second tool is an install configuration tool.
Say you have built an application you want to deploy. In this case
we'll assume
it is home-grown and not a 3rd party pkg using configure (for eg).
You have a bunch of files which need to be installed in several
locations, eg
/usr/local/bin or /usr/local/pkgname/bin, etc and so on
Hand crafting a set of "/usr/bin/install" comands is messy.

I have developed a tool that takes a simple file format and uses it to
construct an install tree. It also constructs the pkginfo file I
mentioned above.
The benefit of this approach is ease of admin and uniformity of results.
It has various nice features like being able to produce multiple
install trees
(for example a developer-install tree which has include files, or a
runtime tree
which omits developer info). It is fully configurable and quite simple
to use.

The third core tool assumes you have a 3rd party program say using
configure which
does produce a respecable install tree (probably using /usr/bin/install
itself).
This new tool is like a super-smart find which runs through the local
copy of the install
tree and constructs the install config file that would otherwise need
to be built by hand,
It does nice things like grouping include files and man pages into
separate logical groups.

I have used these tools (and others) to manage some 600 machines with
around 120,000
files on each split into a few hundred debian-like packages so I know
it works well.

I'd be interested in sharing this with the debian community if there is
enough
enthusiasm and incentive to help build these features into the debian
system
over the next few months.

regards
Kim

RE: Package verification and "/usr/bin/install" tool replacements

2003-10-04 Thread Kim Lester

debsums only does part of the job.
File permissions and ownerships are just as important to completely
verify a package.
It may not matter to "the guy at home with a linux box" but it
greatly matters to "the admin managing a large system".

Debian does not appear to cater for this latter group
My solution does.

RE: Package verification

2003-10-07 Thread Kim Lester

The comments about debsums are useful and contribute
to the whole issue butthey still miss one of my
key points/queries.

There is no way to verify/correct the MODE, USER, GROUP, TYPE
of any files installed in a pkg.
If I am wrong please point out where, with an installed pkg
(and preferably without having a copy of the .dpkg around)
once can tell if a pkg is _installed_correctly_.

This is a real issue in the enterprise world and I think
debian is a better system than Redhat but unless the developer
community becomes aware and proactive about meeting enterprise
needs we're going to lose out to a competing system which
_I_ believe is inferior, but which is getting a lot of commerical
support. I don't greatly care about competition per-se, but I do
care about improving debian to meet my needs and I'm sure those
of others too.

So is the developer community interested in working with me
to add these (and other important features) for a larger
commercial environments. Bear in mind I have real coded
solutions to many of these issues which I hope to be able
to share

One of the solutions I have implemented is a file containing:
type(eg Dir, Sym, File), path, mode, uid, gid, symlink destination
and in my case md5sum and file size (deb would use the sep md5sum file)
[correct size is useful for humans :-)]
This permits my command pkginfo -v to verify that a pkg is
installed correctly and can even fix certain errors (eg mode/uid/gid)
if requested.

HELP: how to compile with the source version of apt

2011-06-23 Thread Kim, Seung
Trying my luck here! =)

I've googled on how to compile from the apt source, but I'm still having a hard
time getting it to run successfully. I need this compiled..
https://github.com/kyleshank/apt-s3#readme

I ran "apt-get build-dep apt-s3" among others and I keep getting "E: You must
put some 'source' URIs in your sources.list"
But I'm not sure why I'd need to put an URI since I'm trying to compile
locally, so technically I shouldn't need any entry in the URI (source.list)
file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This package provides a simple UNIX file system watching in Go.
 .
It is based around the Watcher struct, which should be initialised with
either NewWatcher or NewAutoWatcher. Both functions accept a variable
number of string arguments specfying the paths to be loaded, which may
be globbed, and return a pointer to a Watcher. This value can be started
and stopped with the Start() and Stop() methods. The Watcher will
automatically stop if all the files it is watching have been deleted.

Atinout is a program that will execute AT (Hayes) commands in sequence

It sends the AT commands one by one to the modem, waiting for the final
result code (OK or ERROR) for the currently executing command before
continuing with the next command in the list. The output is captured.

I regularly use atinout to communicate with the modem devices I am
currently developing. This simple utility is helpful for modem or AT
command-compatible device developers to easily test and debug their
devices.

I am going to maintain this under the Debian namespace on Salsa.

Bug#277766: ITP: moniwiki -- MoniWiki is yet another WikiEngine written in PHP. It is fast, light and easy to install. Also it has many enhanced and new features. Moni is slightly modified sound which means What? or What is it? in Korean. The name also indicates that MoniWiki is nearly compatible with the MoinMoin. MoniWiki WikiFormattingRules were inspired and adopted from MoinMoin. Check MoniWikiFeatures to see what MoniWiki has to offer.
