Current policy about statically linked binaries
Hello, I recently filed a bug against recoll (#427783) because it was statically linked against libxapian. Although it is now dynamically linked and the bug is closed, I wonder if there really is a clear policy on the subject. I was sure there was bound to be something about this in the Debian Policy, but it doesn't appear to be so. My guess is that there is an unspoken consensus that binaries which have no reason to do otherwise should be dynamically linked. Am I wrong ? If that really is the case, shouldn't it be written in the policy (probably as a should rather than a must) ? Re: Intend to orphan pscan.
Charles Plessy wrote: > I would like to know if it is OK that I orphan pscan and open a > discussion about its removal. This is a pretty rude thing to do. It is not because a package does have conflicting files with yours that you should remove it. Few ideas: * simply use Conflict: pscan * rename your bin/pscan into something else * if the pscan you're packagin provides a similar functionality, why not setup a system of alternatives ? I would go for the first, as, according to popcon stats, this is unlikely to cause any problems to the users of the package you plan to upload. Source package containing HTML-only form of texinfo doc
Hello all, I am currently reviewing the qtoctave package (#430731) before sponsoring it. The package is now in a pretty good shape, excepted with a problem for which I would like to have some advice: the qtoctave upstream source ships with HTML-only form of the octave's texinfo documentation, which is licensed under GPL. This documentation is actually not installed in any binary package (for many reasons). My first reaction was that shipping this was violating the GPL and that the documentation should be removed. However, do you think it is reasonable to just add a statement to debian/copyright indicating the authors/copyright of this document and where to find its source code should be enough ? This way, no repackaging would be needed. Thanks, Vincent PS: CCing the packager. -- Vincent Fourmond, Debian Developer http://vincent.fourmond.neuf.fr/ -- pretty boring signature, isn't it ? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". In that case, a solution that comes to my mind is to use the Forbid feature of aptitude: you install the locally-modified version and forbid the version currently in stable. This way, aptitude won't install it, but it will upgrade to a later version if there is one. Of course, you'll still have to prepare a new version based on the new one, but at least, you'll notice there is an upgrade available. Thoughts about bts reassign
Hello all, I've recently came up with some problems with the way reassign is currently used: I filed a bug against Qt4 that had (serious) problems on HPPA, making several packages FTBS (#435832). It turned out, as I should have guessed, that this problems had already been reported in bug #433768, but had turned out to be a kernel bug. Of course, when I reported the bug to Qt4, I checked the open bug list for Qt4, but I didn't bother to check for bugs in Qt4's dependencies and kernel and dpkg and build-essentials and... what else ? I would be very surprised if anyone did, actually (and I wouldn't have found the problem, as it was retitled, with no hint of Qt4 left in the title). The outcome was that I lost time filing the bug report, and one of Qt4's maintainer lost time answering. And it's not the first time. So here is what I propose: When a bug filed against a package turns out to be a bug in one of the dependencies (including implicit ones, such as the kernel and so on...), instead of simply reassigning the bug to the faulty package, which makes it disappear from the one that *appears* to be faulty, one should first clone it, then reassign, and mark the original one as blocked by the reassigned bug, something like: clone 12345 -1 reassign -1 foo block 12345 by -1 This way, the bug stays open for anyone to see it, and it is linked to the appropriate discussions in the appropriate package (nice links in the BTS). What do you think about that ? Count me in for that argument too. I personally heavily rely on man (and I'm so glad the imagemagick command-line options are back into their manual page). I think it would be a loss to not have one for each command. An example is pmount, who sometime calls cryptsetup itself relying on gcrypt. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=551540 In that case, the workaround is to call cryptsetup as root, but that doesn't sound right and could lead to more problems... Why gcrypt doesn't leave up to the caller to deal with dropping privileges ? The not-dropping-privileges hack mentioned by Werner Koch in #566351 should be fine enough... Re: How to depend on 32bit libs on amd64? (and what to do with ia32-libs)

Although I admit that schroot is a neat tool to deal with that, it is overkill in the case of wine, and much too complex for users that would be interested to use wine: one of the public that can be attracted to the GNU/Linux side of the game is gamers - especially now that there are so many *recent* games that work with it. Telling them: «well, you'll have to build a ia32 chroot to play...» is likely to drive them off for good. Just for the record, I personally have ia32 chroots for various reasons, but I run wine directly from my amd64 system, because it is way more comfortable this way. Has dak gone fishing ?
Hello, Is there a problem with dak ? I've uploaded a package about 12 hours ago, with no acknowledgment so far. I can't help noticing too that debian-devel-changes hasn't seen any activity since yesterday lunch time. Or am I being simply way too impatient ;-) ?
