python packaging example with debhelper, dh_pysupport and dh_python2

2011-03-10 Thread Thomas Bechtold
Hi,

i tried to understand the correct way to package a python module with
debhelper, dh_pysupport and dh_python2.

I created a python-helloworld example package ( get it from
https://code.launchpad.net/~toabctl/+junk/python-helloworld ) and want
to know if i used the correct way to package a simple python module.

questions are:
- are the package dependencies correct or do i need some more substvars?
- what exactly should do dh_python2 and do i need both, dh_pysupport
_and_ dh_python2? i just found the manpage and [1] as dh_python2
documentation and don't exactly understand why i need dh_python2.
- How should i install the python module if i don't have a setup.py . i
use the debian/install file and just copy all files
to /usr/share/pyshared/helloworld . is this correct?

 Puppet's simple declarative specification language provides powerful
 classing abilities for drawing out the similarities between hosts while
 allowing them to be as specific as necessary, and it handles dependency
 and prerequisite relationships between objects clearly and explicitly.

There's a team on alioth[1] and the packages are all managed in git[2].
Packages from forge.puppetlabs.com can be semi-automatically created
with a python script[3]

We currently use the same base description for every puppet package. I'm
open to change this to a shorter description and switch the order.

i use upstart on a debian system for my own daemon applications to be
sure the applications restart even if there are some problems (ie
segfaults,...). So imho upstart is useful even if the native debian
packages does not support upstart jobs.

Hi,

i just want to ask if it's possible to update to the latest upstart
version. i followed the latest discussion but i just want to have the
latest version available in debian. i don't care about the upstart
support in debian because:
- i have my own upstart packages for my own software and want to control
my own daemons with upstart.
- i don't care about any upstart support in debian

please update the upstart version to 1.5 for wheezy.

TIA,

Tom

i did this already 10 month ago [1]. i also wrote some mails to the
maintainer, he answered, i build some test packages for debian sid,
wrote mails again but at the end nothing happened and the maintainer
didn't answer to my last question what i should do to get a new version
into debian. so i though debian-devel is another way to ask for an
update (or NMU).

Bug#907695: ITP: python-metaextract -- collect metadata about a python module

* Package name: python-metaextract

  Upstream Author : Thomas Bechtold
* URL : https://pypi.org/project/metaextract/
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Python
  Description : collect metadata about a python module

metaextract is a tool to collect metadata about a python module. For example
you may have a sdist tarball from the Python Package Index and you want to know
it’s dependencies. metaextract can collect theses dependencies. The tool was
first developed in py2pack but is now it’s own module to be useful for others,
too.

The package is a dependency of py2pack which I also intent to package for
Debian.
