RE: Intel Atom Poulsbo chipset Xorg driver in Debian

2009-07-05 Thread Kushal Koolwal

It seems since the last post, some more work got done on the Poulsbo chipset[1]
from Ubuntu folks. People have reported to get it working on Fedora 10+ [2] and
even Gentoo [3] also using the source Fedora source packages posted by Adam W.

I do understand that with Debian's strict policy this might not be an
appropriate package to be included in the repos right now but I was wondering
if somebody can throw some pointers on how to get this working on Debian Lenny
so that individual users can get their hardware working (GAM 500) using Xorg
driver if they choose to do so. For me, right now I don't care about 3D
acceleration stuff. All I am looking for is a basic Xorg driver with 2D stuff
working.

I am not a DD or a kernel hacker but I would be happy to do some trial and
error work in order to get the packages compile and install on Debian Lenny.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Intel Atom Processor

2008-07-21 Thread Kushal Koolwal

Hello,

First of all I apologize if this question is not appropriate for this mailing
list. I scanned the entire Debian Mailing Lists and I thought this might be the
most appropriate. If it is not then please direct me to the correct one.

Now the question:
I was wondering if there is any development amongst the Debian community with
regards to supporting Intel's latest low power Atom processor which will be
mostly used in UMPC (Ultra mobile PC).
http://www.intel.com/technology/atom/index.htm

While researching over this on the Internet I came across the following website
which mentions about Ubuntu having some sort of support for this processor.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/ubuntu-linux-remix.html

And therefore I was thinking if Debian Project is planning to natively support
these?

Thank you in advance.

Kushal

That's true. But it seems that these processors are low power and are made for
Ultra mobile PC (UMPC) and netbooks and to take advantage of this the
applications need to be optimized/ported to take advantages that this
processor has to offer.

For example, Ubuntu started the netbook-remix program to port applications for
Intel Atom processors based on the Intel's moblin project
(http://www.moblin.org/).
https://edge.launchpad.net/netbook-remix

And therefore I was wondering if Debian community is planning to have something
like this.

Thank you once again for your time.

Yes. Exactly!

At this point of time I am not sure what is going to look like. May be it will
help me if you can tell me what exactly do you mean by it. I apologize for my
unfamiliarity with some of the terms.

Yes this would be awesome. This will bring Debian up to the speed of likes of
Ubuntu. I would be happy to assist in this with whatever knowledge and skills I
have.

Thanks for effort and initiative.

Hmm..I think the following text confused me from this website:
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/netbook-remix

"Ubuntu Netbook Remix leverages Moblin technologies optimized for the Intel
Atom processor. Intel and Canonical are working to create a next generation
computing experience across a new category of affordable Internet-centric,
portable devices; including Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), netbooks, nettops
and embedded devices based on Intel Atom processor technology."

I thought the Ubuntu Netbook Remix is result of moblin technologies

Thanks for sharing the information. So what is the conclusion on this? I
apologize if this has already been answered by someone - I am new to this list
and hence I may fail to understand the way things work here.

For now should we just keep track of the EeePC?

I know the entire Debian community is now busy pushing out Lenny (Wooh!!! -
I am waiting for it too :D), but is there any plan to have something like what
Ubuntu Net Remix (UNR)?

Thank you all for your time.

Supporting 2.6.27 in Lenny? - Long term support

2008-10-17 Thread Kushal Koolwal

First of all I apologize if this has been brought up somewhere else.

It seems that on LKML it was announced that 2.6.27 will be a long term support
kernel:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/10/11/235

Since we haven't released Lenny yet (freeze state I believe), wouldn't it be a
good idea to include 2.6.27 as the default Lenny kernel instead of 2.6.26?

Most of the newer release of other distributions like Fedora, Ubuntu, and
openSUSE are going to be based on 2.6.27
http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/10/14/322

Also I am not a DD so I might not be aware 100% of the freeze policy as I ask
this question.

Thanks

About 6 months back I had done some extensive benchmarking on real-time kernels
applying RT patch to Debian stock kernel on x86 architecture.

I read about call for help in maintaining, testing debian rt kernel here:

I will be glad to offer help in testing real-time kernels. I only have x86

Intel Atom Poulsbo chipset Xorg driver in Debian

2009-06-17 Thread Kushal Koolwal

It seems that the support for Intel's Poulsbo chipset (Graphics GMA 500) for
Atom processor (US15) is sparse [1].
So far I have been able to find a driver package in Ubuntu Hardy [2].

I was wondering if anyone has ideas as to if Debian will get the support for
Poulsbo chipset.

If this is not the correct mailing list to ask this question, please let me
know where to go.

Can you point out which code of the kernel has not been made upstream yet so
that I keep a track of it when it goes into mainline.

Also I tried compiling the source packages from Ubuntu repo (see original mail)
but did not have any luck with that. Right now I don't care much about 3D
stuff, I just need to get the basic 2D working.
