No german umlauts in console and xterm
Hi! I tried to fix an old problem with my Debian system (woody) today, but failed. When typing german umlauts my system behaves inconsistent: In most X programs they appear fine (i.e. Netscape, several mail clients, XEmacs, ..) When typing in xterm|gnome-terminal windows they don't appear. Some chars do beep, but none of the umlauts appear. When typing in joe (a text based full screen editor) I get: "vd|VD\_" for "öäüÖÄÜß". Now for something (not so) completely different: I call kbdconfig as root out of the console (it doesn't matter if X is running). Then I chose i386/qwertz/de-latin1-nodeadkeys. "kbdconfig" asks me if I want to test and I type "y"es. While doing these test typing, alle umlauts appear correctly, saying: ö (0xf6) ä (0xe4) ü (0xfc) Ö (0xd6) Ä (0xc4) Ü (0xdc) ß (0xdf) When I end testing and install this keymap as my default keymap and activate it, umlauts won't work again, same behavior as before. Does anyone have an idea what happens here? What parts of my system are involved in getting chars from the keyboard to the screen with/without X? Some Docs to read? Right now I don't understand the underlying issues and have no idea where to start. What is the difference between "de-latin1" and "de-latin1-nodeadkeys" BTW? Debian banner ad outdated
Hello! I just browsed freshmeat and a Debian banner appeared at the top of that page. Unfortunately it reads "version 2.1". RFA: Gmp3 - Adopt it or remove it right away?
Package: wnpp Severity: normal Hello! It isn't supported upstream anymore. Homepage is gone, mail to author bounces. Gmp3 isn't very nice and a little bit buggy for me. I don't have the knowledge and time to work at the source and don't feel like trying, either. If someone wants to jump in, now is the right time to do it. I would suggest to remove Gmp3 from Debian. There are nice players out there and Gmp3 isn't very functional compared to the other programs. What should I do? I didn't orphan it right now because I am willing to do some uploads, apply patches or do other changes if someone provides information how to do it. I won't do this forever though. bye Florian -- Florian Hinzmann private: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Debian: [EMAIL PROTECTED] PGP-Key fingerprint: DD 61 74 34 04 FB 8A BD 43 54 83 38 0C 82 EF B1 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". apt-get does not do what dselect says
Hello! Problem: apt is removing some packages when started from dselect within prior notice inside dselect. (this might be related to bug#151662, #157210, but I am not sure it is the same currently -- maybe discussion makes it more clear to me, I can tighten up my report and send it to the BTS) I didn't upgrade my system due to the libpng/libgtk dependency problems for some time. And only some partial upgrades for even some more days. Today I tried again and it looks good inside dselect. Only about twenty lines shown at the dependency resolution screen. One of the lines is libsnmp-perl which depends on perlapi-5.6.1 which is not available. One return to leave this page, another to start [I]nstallation. After that apt is kindly informing me which packages it is going to remove. One of that packages is tkmib which had not been deselected within dselect. Why does dselect not try to resolve this conflict before letting me quit out of dselect? perl-base 5.6.1-7 is still installed, satisfying (sp?) the dependency of libsnmp-perl. Until now I was under the impression if I leave the dependency resolution screen of dselect without using "Q" everything is fine. "Fine" meaning, some packages might not be updated/installed due to dependency problems. And why does dselect think perlapi-5.6.1 isn't available? perl-base 5.6.1-7 provides it, which is currently installed. Perl is on hold now which is a possible solution dselect did not offer. Another example: I had to set perlmagick on hold, too, to prevent webmagick from being deinstalled. But neither perlmagick nor webmagick appeared within the dependency resolution screen. If I would just be pressing enter webmagick would have been deinstalled without prior notice _inside_ dselect. (apt does list it correctly as a package to be removed. I am a bit lost here as I don't understand the logic inside dselect fully. With earlier versions of dselect one had to press "Q" to get out of dselect's dependency screen when there was nothing dselect or you could do about it (i.e. some dependency which is simply not available). I appreciate the new behavior where dselect quits by pressing return. But packages which are set to be updated and will be removed instead should be listed IMHO (i.e. webmagick and tkmib, see above). I will try to understand this better and file a proper bug report. But I wanted to write this mail now nevertheless. Maybe some discussion speeds it up, maybe someone already thought about this and likes to share his thoughts. PGP: Key cross-signing in Hamburg/Germany

Missing Documentation? (Bugs: Severity, debian/control: Priority
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hi! Maybe they aren't there, maybe I am too tired: I don't find to things: - - An explanation of the available severity levels I may use in bug reports and - - an explanation of the available priorities I may use in the debian/control file. I know I've read about these once, but I can't find them now. I only remember a package is important if some longtime linux-users would say "damn, where is foo/bar" if it isn't there. I liked that explanation .. ;) I will gladly receive a RTFM if you give me a pointer where to read. Bug-System: Why no mail to maintainer on reassign?
Hello! When a new bug is reported against a given package, the package maintainer gets this bug report as a personal mail. I consider this really useful as the maintainers don't have to check the bug-lists to know if there are new bug reports against their packages. Later someone will reassign that bug to the correct package, but the maintainer of that package won't get any mail. He won't notice the existance of that bug until he checks the Bug-System online. I suggest if a bug report is reassigned to a given package the maintainer of that package gets the bug report as well as any replies to it. I didn't file this as a bug against bugs.debian.org as I am not very long on the debian-lists and I fear I touch some old, well discussed point here. ;) So, suggestions appreciated. On 23-Jun-98 James Troup wrote: > Florian Hinzmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > >> Later someone will reassign that bug to the correct package, but the >> maintainer of that package won't get any mail. > > That's simply not true. I've read some bug reports online containing entries saying "Report forwarded" or "Information forwarded" after both the initial bug report and any replies. I thought this kind of entries are generated everytime any mail is being sent by the bug system. Reading www.debian.org/Bugs/db/23/23725.html I found an initial entry "Information forwarded", but no additional entry after the reassignment. I thought: No entry --> No mail has been sent. And I took a part of www.de.debian.org/Bugs/server-control.html as a confirmation for my assumption: --- reassign bugnumber package Records that bug #bugnumber is a bug in package. This can be used to set the package if the user forgot the pseudo-header, or to change an earlier assignment. No notifications are sent to anyone (other than the usual information in the processing transcript). --- If mail is sent to the maintainer on reassignments and just no entry stating this is generated for some reason then I am satisfied and will be quiet. ;) Greetings Florian --- Florian Hinzmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] NEW PGP-Key fingerprint: DD 61 74 34 04 FB 8A BD 43 54 83 38 0C 82 EF B1 pgp5WxASYqaXf.pgp Description: PGP signature
