Hi Debian developers,

I'm working as a consultant on a project to develop drivers for the
PowerVR graphics processor in the Cedarview family of Intel Atom
microprocessors in a Debian environment. The current target is
Wheezy, and Intel wishes to get the drivers into the official
distribution.

What they've failed to take into account is that Wheezy is currently
frozen in preparation of release, so I'm more than a bit skeptical of
getting a new package in (I was only brought in to the project very
recently). However, I promised to ask you about this, so here we go.

It should be noted that due to licensing issues, the driver will be
closed source. The kernel component is under the GPL, so a dkms
package will be made.

I'm surprised. Wasn't Intel committed to support Opensource for all if
their drivers? Are they changing their policy? If so, that's quite bad,
since both ATI and Nvidia have been annoying all the community,
insisting with non-free drivers. If we're stuck with no alternative,
with Intel also going closed source, what type of hardware can we buy
then? :(

I believe Intel has not changed their policy when it comes to their own
hardware. The problem is that the graphics chip included in the recent
Atom processors is licensed from Imagination Technologies.
Unfortunately IMG is rather more conservative with their licensing and
refuses to open up their code.

Open source enthusiasts would do well to avoid these Atom models, but
the Core i[357] processor families are still safe for the time being.

d-i wheezy rc1 status; and unblock(-udeb)s, round 4

2012-12-27 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi folks!

(Including debian-devel@ to let people know where we stand.)

I'm happy to report we're getting closer to a first release candidate
for the Debian Installer. I've still got a few packages on my radar,
but the list has been steadily shrinking during the last week.

That basically boils down to:
 - busybox vs. setupcon: #606395 (console keymap in g-i)
 - cdebconf: Info message position (comments welcome): #696699;
apparently that one didn't reach the list when I submitted it,
   bounced today.
 - grub-installer: install from USB issues.
 - manual: needs an upload after a few more patches are reviewed.
 - qcontrol: #696815 (armhf addition, via t-p-u).
 - yaboot-installer: needs review+upload

I'm currently awaiting feedback on the first two; the third one needs
some code changes and I'm going to work on it right now; qcontrol can
be handled by Ian/release team; yaboot-installer wants somebody to
look at it, will do once I'm done with grub-installer unless somebody
beats me to it.

If you see other things you want to get fixed, now is the time to
mention them (by mailing -boot@).

Release team, here's a fourth list of unblock(-udeb)s. Still no need
for urgents since there's some more work to do. :)

jessie: Mounting /usr in the initramfs

2012-12-27 Thread Roger Leigh
Hi,

Hope you're all having a good time over Christmas and New Year.

I've created a wiki page here for this proposed release goal for jessie:
  http://wiki.debian.org/ReleaseGoals/MountUsrInInitramfs

Any information you'd like to add to the page for the upstart or systemd
init systems would be very useful. Currently, I've included the
required changes for initramfs-tools and util-linux (plus patches) and
sketched out the needed changes in sysvinit. Any other information
or discussion you would like to add would, of course, be appreciated.

It won't be possible to get this started in earnest until after wheezy,
but I had the opportunity to start playing with it over the last few
days. The patches are sufficient to get things going, though they are
by no means final. So far I've only tested it with local/local and not
on NFS/NFS or combinations of NFS/local; if anyone who cares about these
cases would like to test them, that would also be appreciated. One
missing bit here is not bringing up the network if the root is local
and /usr is on NFS. Shouldn't be hard to add, but I lack the ability
to implement and test it until after New Year.

Regards,
Roger

I'm an aging long time user of "sid/unstable".
I never could keep track of all those fun names either.
Therefore yes please Debian should accompany them by their version
number if/when insisting on using them.

Please remove the "Mounting /etc in the initramfs" part.
Even ignoring its merit, it has nothing to do with this and mixing up
things will not help reaching a consensus.

Bug#696848: general: USB flash drive unmount problems (both squeeze/wheezy)

2012-12-27 Thread Eugene
Package: general
Severity: normal

Working both in squeeze/xfce/thunar and wheezy/lxde/pcmanfm (both up-to-date).
Three computers: Old 1.3GHz/i386, New 2x2.2GHz/amd64 and eeepc 0.9GHz.
Tested on Transcend jetflash 4Gb and Kingston DataTraveler 4Gb.
When I eject the USB flash drive (by right-clicking and selecting menu option)
the system says the "device is safe to be removed", thou if I remove the USB
flash drive it results in error in the last file written (not always, but often
- almost 100% if the file was written few seconds before).
I've noticed the flash drive led flashing a few times after about 5 seconds
after unmounting.
When I wait for 10 seconds after "safe to be removed" message there are
regularily no errors.
This problem also appeared with external HDD 750Gb and internal 500Gb HDD
through USB to SATA bridge, thou far less often (1 event for each per about
50-100 write operations compared to ~50% for USB flash drive).

It seems that the cache doesn't appear to be properly finished to be written on
the flash drive.
