In that case, I think that the above discussion showed that there is a
quite strong rationale for this: don't have packages depending on menu
just because they need su-to-root. And, as Russ mentioned, it is like
3 years than many people are waiting for this to happen. I suspect
that the aggressive NMU button is appealing for many.

From my understanding, trying to have a perfect solution (xdg-su) has
delayed progress on that matter for a really long timeleading to
the exact opposite : enforcing many packages to depend on menu while
several of them probably wouldn't otherwise.

In French, I would call that "vente forcée".

From what I understand, xdg-su will not happen. On the other hand, an
easy fix (a new binary package) can help doing progress here. Isn't it
time to do it?

Sorry for being harsh, but it's maybe time to move on.

No, they would need to invoke them using a wrapper in /usr/bin. Think of
“git foo” or “svn blah” as good examples to follow.

Bug#647505: ITP: tcp-over-dns -- TCP tunnel through the standard DNS protocol

2011-11-03 Thread Wolfgang Frisch
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Wolfgang Frisch

* Package name: tcp-over-dns
  Version : 1.3
  Upstream Author : Tim Valenzuela
* URL : http://analogbit.com/software/tcp-over-dns
* License : BSD
  Programming Lang: Java
Description : TCP tunnel through the standard DNS protocol

tcp-over-dns contains a special dns server and a special dns client. The
client and server work in tandem to provide a TCP (and UDP!) tunnel
through the standard DNS protocol.

This is similiar to the defunct NSTX dns tunelling software. The purpose
of this software to is succeed where NSTX failed. For me at least, all
NSTX tunnels disconnect within tens of seconds in real world situations.
tcp-over-dns was written to be quite robust while at the same time
providing acceptable bandwidth speeds.

Hmm, does NM works if nis runs ? nis daemon has by default no
time-out, starts before NM provides a network and locks the machine
lng time 'til root can become access to stop nis.

If that is true, this is a serious flaw in nis and really needs to be
fixed there. Otherwise, how would you handle the case where the ethernet

You don’t use NIS on a desktop machine without a local cache, so this is

Ideally, applications should support policykit natively and split the
part which requires admin privileges in a small, separate helper binary,
which controlls the access to it via policykit.

pkexec, similar to gksudo, will run the full application with root
privileges.
pkexec has native GUI implementations (providing the authentication
dialogs) for KDE, gnome-shell and a GTK based interface.
It also works on the command line.
pkexec also supports "sudo" mode, i.e. if you add users to the sudo
group, they will be prompted for their own password instead of the root
password.
So it can be considered as a replacement for both gksudo and gksu (and
all the other su and sudo frontends).

Cheers,
Michael

Description-less packages file

2011-11-03 Thread Joerg Jaspert
Hello world,

I don't know if I really got everyone who should have a copy of this
mail in my CC list, so please forward it to wherever you think I am
missing. Thanks.

I just merged a patch from Ansgar to generate the Packages files without
the English description embedded inside them. Instead they are now
written into a new file, the "English Translation" file in
"main/i18n/Translation-en.bz2". They thus appear alongside all other
translated descriptions as "just another language". apt & co will (or
should) just download those Translation files to show the description,
as they do already for all other languages.
This lets us save quite a bit of space on our mirrors by not repeating
them as many times as we have architectures - and also enables
non-English-speaking users (and eventually multi-arch enabled APT) to
save on download size, as they no longer need to download a language
that is of no use to them or is already there.

As this is is a larger changeset we did not switch the official dists/
tree directly. Instead we are providing files generated in this way over
at [1] for you to test with and report bugs you find in this
implementation or in the handling of it in whatever tool breaks
down. That location is updated right during dinstall so should always
contain current information.

Provided there are no showstoppers turning up we intend to switch the
official dists/ tree one month from now.

I don't want to have to know which packages I have to install to have a
fonctionnal gnome desktop. So I want to install gnome and I want it to
install a gnome desktop.

During last upgrade network-manager does break things on my station (home

network-manager, it works now with

I need gnome and I need network. My network.

apt defaults to install all recommands, gnome works fine without

network-manager breaks some unusual installations.

This declares a strong, but not absolute, dependency.
The Recommends field should list packages that would be found
together with this one in all but unusual installations.

This field has been done for network-manager-gnome !

Sincerly,
 Jean Charles Delépine
