That's the reason why it gets pulled in, however that's not a reason why
it is needed on desktop installations.

And since network-manager disallows even basic networking above "a single
interface with DHCP", this makes the gnome-core metapackage useless.

I'm not talking about router setups. Try a regular desktop with IPv6 that
runs virtual machines (VirtualBox, lxc) and has usb networking[1] enabled so
I can copy things to/from the phone ten times faster than over wifi. You
can't have any of this with n-m.

Also, http://bugs.debian.org/542095 -- this came up already before and after
a brief flamewar has been promptly fixed. Yet since a few days ago the hard
dependency on n-m is back.

[1]. Many thanks to new udev which makes the usb0 interface work out of the
box, including hotplugging.

Bug#645895: ftp.debian.org: epoch should be part of the .deb file name

Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

(Cc-ed to debian-devel@l.d.o for their input in whether this would cause
problems anywhere else in the toolchain.)

It's a bit confusing that the file names of .debs don't contain the
epoch. I think we should change that.

I would suggest %-encoding it, so foo-1:1 becomes foo_1%251_all.deb.
The reason to not include a : verbatim is it won't work correctly on all
file systems (: gets translated to / in the UI on Mac OS X and is
disallowed for at least FAT, I'm not sure about NTFS). Also, : is
traditionally how you reference remote files and devices with tar and
scp (and probably more tools), so avoiding : in files names seem
prudent.

Build error form Ubuntu regarding xz compression

2011-10-19 Thread olivier sallou
Hi,
I received an email error from Ubuntu regarding build of a package
(extracted from debian):

Rejected:
Require Pre-Depends: dpkg (>= 1.15.6) when using xz compression.
Require Pre-Depends: dpkg (>= 1.15.6) when using xz compression.

Package indeed uses xz compression, but do you know what I should put
in package for this on debian side?

Should I add in debian control a pre-depends on dpkg as said in message?

I think that someone else already the issue...

Thanks

Olivier

Yes, you should. That's because no dpkg << 1.15.6 [0] is able to uncompress
xz-compressed data.tar members of binary packages, hence the Pre-Depends
(which implies that you have a fully configured dpkg >= 1.15.6 before your
package gets uncompressed).

Now, strictly speaking, this is not formally needed within Debian as our
current stable has a newer dpkg (1.15.8.11), but this cannot hurt.

Cheers,

OdyX

P.S. This would probably have been more suited for debian-mentors.

Is there any reason other than aesthetics to change this? There are a
lot of tools which have to build a .deb filename from debian/control
and debian/changelog or from a Packages file. Right now it is trivial
to strip the epoch where necessary - this change requires multiple
character substitution which is far more error prone.

(It would dramatically complicate all the tools I'm using / developing
for Emdebian.)

The epoch is fully visible in the pool/ and has no direct relevance to
the binary package version.

expressions in tools all over the place.

I think we should not have % characters in .deb filenames if at all
possible.

Avoiding unnecessary changes would also seem prudent. I for one don't
think this change would be at all helpful.

Re: RFC: usb-modeswitch 1.2.0 release embedding jimtcl

2011-10-19 Thread Didier Raboud
Hi all again,

first of all, thanks for the healthy discussion.

Now, given the feedback, I plan to go with the brand new option 6 which is an
option 2, "done right" (eh, IMHO).

6) "Allow interpretation using separate libjim, from jimtcl"
This means packaging jimtcl and allow the usb-modeswitch-dispatcher to be
dynamically linked against libjim.
(That, plus "repacking to avoid the embedded jimtcl copy")
Pros: relatively easy, avoids the binary embedding of jimtcl.
Cons: replaces the need of the desktop install on a "tcl interpreter" to
"libjim"; it weighting (with default options that are more than what
is needed by the usb-modeswitch-dispatcher) 268k.

As far as I could see, it's possible to win 32k by providing a libjim-tiny
alternative library, but it doesn't seem worth it.

So, ITP on its way I guess.

Cheers,

OdyX

The first and obvious one is to avoid file name clashes in the
archive. Another one is so the version number in the file name actually
is the version number of the package which makes it less confusing when
you need to download a package with an epoch by hand for whatever
reason.

If it would dramatically complicate all the tools you're using for
Emdebian, your tools must be pretty simple and I'd suggest you move the
bits that generates debs into some sort of module. Or your toolset
isn't particularly big. :-)

Multi-character substitutions are not particularly hard to do, nearly no
matter which language you're talking about.

No, it's not visible in the pool. That's what I'm suggesting we

You shouldn't trust the file name to contain the version number anyway.

Why not? Are there any tools that have trouble with % characters in
file names?

This is simply nonsense. NM allows multiple interfaces, static
addressing, static routes, IPv4 and IPv6, and it does all this using the
proper kernel interfaces.

Is 'USB networking' something other than a USB-attached Ethernet
adapter? Does it not work with Network Manager?

Virtual machine networking works just fine for me with virt-manager and
network-manager.

The FAQ says it doesn't support: PPP, PPPoE, Mobile Broadband, VPNs, or
controlling two interfaces at the same time (I think that means it only
brings one *up* at a time - out of one wired and one wireless).

Based on the web site, it doesn't appear to have a GUI for configuring
encryption; you have to edit text files. Which is fine for you and me,
but not what I would call user-friendly.

Quite why GNOME should have this inferior alternative, I don't know. If
you want to make your own custom desktop then fine, but don't demand
that a desktop metapackage should support it.

It will also break random scripts out there, so we might actually want to
have it very clear on how much benefit we'd get from this change.

What would be the point of it all, then? We have never had a filename
version clash. Even if it would eventually happen, it is best that the
maintainer bring it up for some brainstorming, because it CAN cause a lot of
annoyance (people are NOT often aware of epochs).

Anyway, we would indeed need to encode the epoch separator, as ":" causes
way too much trouble.

Well, while % is xml/xhtml/html-friendly, it is *not* http-friendly, and
will require double-encoding.

MongoAlchemy is a layer on top of the Python MongoDB driver which adds
client-side schema definitions, an easier to work with and
programmatic query language, and a Document-Object mapper which allows
python objects to be saved and loaded into the database in a type-safe
 way.
 .
An explicit goal of this project is to be able to perform as many
operations as possible without having to perform a load/save cycle
since doing so is both significantly slower and more likely to cause
 data loss.

Lettuce is an extremely useful and charming tool for BDD (Behavior

as automated tests for Python projects, just as Cucumber does for Ruby.
 .
Lettuce makes the development and testing process really easy,
scalable, readable and - what is best - it allows someone who doesn’t
program to describe the behavior of a certain system, without imagining
those descriptions will automatically test the system during its
 development.

Didier has already answered this. Making such a change is indeed
harmless in Debian.

I would also add that I've been fixing all these in Ubuntu as we go
along (in changes that we'll be able to discard after Ubuntu 12.04 LTS)
on the grounds that it's basically our fault for not having managed to
get dpkg 1.15.6 into our last LTS release and thus we should cope with
the fallout; so while I certainly wouldn't say no if Debian developers
want to add the appropriate Pre-Depends, we'll cope if you don't.

Thanks,

Yes. And some are probably broken because they think that the files are

That tools handling .debs can't trust the file name to match the package
and version doesn't mean we shouldn't generate packages where the name
matches the package and version.

I'm not sure we've never had a clash. The maintainer might well just
have worked around it silently.

Yes, that's somewhat ugly. You already have to handle % encoded links
for anything pointing to packages with version numbers including ~
though, so this won't make any difference there.

There seem to be a few packages which still depend on console-tools
without an alternative dependency on kbd or console-utilities, e.g.
goto-fai or gcpegg. You probably want to file bugs against those.

Otherwise, removing console-tools is a good idea IMO.

Hi Ben,

It's great to see that someone is working on getting CiviCRM into
Debian. I wanted to let you know that there was some previous work on
this a while back that you might be able to leverage. Daniel Holbach
and I put some effort into this as part of the Ubuntu NGO team, but
this has stalled largely due to the number of bundled PHP code copies.
There is a wiki page that we used to track this work [0]. There you
can find links to debian packaging branches for quite a few of the
bundled code copies as well as a link to a PPA with binary and source
packages. We forwarded our work to pkg-php-maint at the time. Some of
these things have found there way into Debian since. There is also a
branch for a civicrm package at lp:~ubuntu-ngo/civicrm/ubuntu This
package was functional, but never really ready for prime-time.

Please let me know if there is any way I can help.

And it would be more difficult for reading - at least for me. Every time
copying package files from apt cache which *have* the epoch included I
remove this short part in the file names (e.g. 4%3a) because it is bad to
read and have no benefit.

Because that's a valid version in itself, and also a valid component of a

Packages depending on libncurses5 but not build-depending on libncurses-dev

2011-10-19 Thread Sven Joachim
Recently the readline-dev package and its GPL2 variant
libreadline-gplv2-dev dropped their dependencies on libncurses5-dev.
This prompted me to look for packages that currently depend on
libncurses5 but do not build-depend on libncurses5-dev or its aliases
libncurses-dev and ncurses-dev, nor have libncurses5-dev pulled in via
other means.

In the end I found 58 such packages on i386 in unstable/experimental,
all but two of which build-depend on one of the libreadline*-dev
packages. Since those are potentially RC-buggy, they probably deserve a
look. The two exceptions are afflib (bug #645915) and

Yup, binary-only. I believe the dependency is present in the binary that
we get from upstream, and no -dev packages are used since we don't build
the binary.

Ah, OK.
I thought it was the other way around: I hadn't found the time to read
the whole log of bug #642757, sorry.

Exactly.

True.
I don't know how common this scenario is, but it's true that
apt-listbugs is not able to save your day when that happens!
Unless an auxiliary bug report is filed against the package that should
not be upgraded, I mean.

I think that, currently, this is the best course of action.

Since xserver-xorg-core/2:1.11.1-1 is already in testing, a bug report
of severity grave against version 2:1.11.1-1 should not prevent future
migrations to testing of newer xserver-xorg-core versions (please
correct me, if I am wrong).

This bug report could be marked as blocked by #642757.
It will be possible to close it, as soon as a fixed version of
nvidia-graphics-drivers has migrated to testing.

True, but it seems that a good number of people care about this issue...

Sure: a good descriptive bug report title would help users to determine
whether they may ignore the issue or not.

Maybe two entirely new BTS commands should be created, with mandatory
version info. Something like "exposed by" and "hidden by" (a better name
should perhaps be chosen).
That way, it could be agreed that:

bug #nnn (assigned to package B, found in version v1) affects package A
means that
the bug is actually present in B/v1, but causes breakage in package A
hence, do not upgrade to B/v1 or later, if you want to avoid breaking
package A

bug #nnn (assigned to package B, found in version v1) is exposed by
E/v2, is hidden by E/v3, is exposed by E/v4
means that
the bug is actually present in B/v1, but only shows up when a version
of package E which exposes the bug is installed
hence, do not upgrade to E/v2 or E/v4, if you want to avoid exposing
the bug in package B (it is however safe to upgrade to E/v3)

The versions of package E used in "exposed by" and "hidden by" would be
treated exactly like version tracking (which is driven by the "found"
and "fixed" commands): in other words, the changelog would be used to
determine the most recent descendant of version v, among the listed
"exposed" and "hidden" versions, and this descendant would determine
whether version v exposes or hides the bug.

I think that, if the above idea looks good to you and others, maybe the
opinion of debbugs developers should be asked.
If they think it's OK, a proper wishlist bug report should be filed
against the debbugs package.
Only after this new feature is implemented in the BTS, I will be able
to make use of it in apt-listbugs..

Bug#645723: general: asks for root password instead of user password

2011-10-19 Thread Bob Proulx
Jimmy Li wrote:
> Apparently, anything that needs root asks for the root password instead of my
> user password. Apparently, it's using su instead of sudo.

The debian-installer will set up your system to use either su or sudo
depending upon whether you specified a root password or only a user
password. If you set a root password then it will set it up for su.
If you only set a user password then it will set it up for sudo. What
you describe is normal when the installer has been given a root
password.

This selection is controlled by the alternatives system for the
'libgksu-gconf-defaults' command. You can change this selection by
updating it to use sudo instead of su.

Documentation for the gksu library is available here:

  /usr/share/doc/libgksu2-0/README.Debian

Where it says:

The gksu library enables the user to run programs with root powers
using one of `su' or `sudo' as backend. If the application that uses
the library doesn't specify the backend it wants to use, the backend
will be selected through the `/apps/gksu/sudo-mode' boolean gconf
  option.

To change the selection to something different:

  # update-alternatives --config libgksu-gconf-defaults
  # update-gconf-defaults

> Just a moment ago, I had to manually re-add myself to the sudo
> group. Now sudo works, but all applications still ask for the root
> password instead of the user password.

You did not say if the use of su and the root password was a change in
behavior or if it has always been using su since system installation
time. But if it is a change then perhaps something updated the
gconf-defaults on your system recently.

The sudo configuration setup is only for sudo. It doesn't affect the
libgksu-gconf-defaults configuration. If sudo is to be used then of
course sudo itself needs to be configured and working too. Again the
debian-installer does this automatically if only a user password is
given at install time.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hello,

As far as I know not (fully) for the bridged setup [0]: NM recognized
the bridge, but since it doesn't have a "link status" [1], VPNs are
disabled.

Background: I have one desktop PC which is my main work station at home,
which alse can run several VMs. Since I also own other mobile devices, I
like to connect from them to the VMs.
ut I also use OpenVPN to open tunnels to other sides on demand.

[0] A dedicated bridge for all VMs works fine, as then the ethernet
interface is fully handled by NM itself.

[1] Only the physical ethernet card has a link status, which is part of
the bridge, but NM doesn't handle this.
