IMHO i think that using the mapped syntax can bring some consistency rather than having logs and configuration files with two different kinds of addresses that should be treated differently by the program, when reading the configuration, and by the log analyser tools. And of course if a program handles IPv6, there will be the need to deal with IPv6 addresses in logs and configuration. Why shouldn't they work with a different kernel? It's obvious that if a program starts to support IPv6 at some point, something will change in the configuration files, but what is the role of the kernel in that? The protocol works equally with debconf or cdebconf. As far as the packages are concerned, there's no need to write for one or the other. Personally, I know of a few problems oustanding before cdebconf can be used without debconf installed but those are not related to how the protocol itself is used. The documentation you need is for the protocol. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ http://e-mail.is-not-s.ms/ pgps2h8qVMK4O.pgp Description: PGP signature

After months, you *still* do not understand the issue... If a kernel without IPv6 support is used then e.g. an ACL will contain plain IPv4 addresses as expected, but when a kernel with IPv6 support is installed in your scenario then that ACL will not work anymore (without special code) because now the IPv4 addresses would need to be converted to v6-mapped addresses. -- ciao, Marco signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Quoting Tomasz Muras (tom...@muras.eu): > Hi, > > Hopefully a very quick questions (please CC me in response): > * should I use cdebconf for new packages, or debconf? Well, as Neil already answered: none of these. Your package should work with both. If you're using debhelper, that's easy to achieve: add "${misc:Depends}" to each binary package dependencies and correct dependencies will be added automagically (including for debconf). There's actually a good lintian test about this. More general note: if your binary packages have both "${misc:Depends}" *and* "debconf | debconf-2.0", you can remove the latter. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
