Bug#493818: ITP: teseq -- a utility for rendering terminal typescripts human-readable

2008-08-05 Thread Ryan Niebur
Package: wnpp
Owner: Ryan Niebur <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: teseq
  Version : 1.0.0
  Upstream Author : Micah Cowan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.gnu.org/software/teseq/
* License : GPLv3+
  Programming Lang: C, Perl
  Description : a utility for rendering terminal typescripts human-readable

GNU Teseq is a tool for analyzing files that contain control
characters and terminal control sequences. It is intended to be
useful for diagnosing terminal emulators, and programs that make
heavy use of terminal features (such as those based on the Curses
library).

It is primarily targeted at individuals who possess a basic
understanding of terminal control sequences, especially CSI
sequences; however, by default Teseq will try to identify and
describe the sequences that it encounters, and the behavior they
might produce in a terminal.

Looking at the package relationships, I can't see any reason that it
wouldn't. But I wouldn't swear on this before someone tests it. (I think
unstable is an ok place to test this. :-)

Unless overridden by the release managers, I would give this a freeze
exception, yes.

Certainly, it is just the daemon.

The piece of software that acts as GUI is called escritorio-movistar (ITP

Not too bad, it seem.

Just to chip in my view on this, as one of the sysvinit package
maintainers. I believe dropping shutdown symlinks in runlevel 0 and 6
for scripts that only kill the daemon is a good idea, and have
recommended on several occations when I submitted BTS reports about
dependency based boot sequencing.

As far as I am concerned, the boot/shutdown system in Debian do not
need stop symlinks to kill daemons, as init.d/sendsigs do the same job
quicker and better, and thus consider all packages doing it to be
wasting resources. I would recommend severity normal, as this issue
is just wasting resources, not breaking functionality.

It would be great if we could speed up shutdown a bit more. :)

Happy hacking,

This is already possible using the "flag" represented by the symlinks
in /etc/rcX.d/. If the package maintainer do not want the script to
run in runlevel 0 and 6, the symlinks will be missing. If the
sysadmin want to run the script anyway, the symlinks can be added.
The package system will keep the symlinks and the sysadmin should get
what he want.

Bug#484700: further info and fix

2008-08-05 Thread Neil Williams
After discussions with Bernhard on IRC, this bug has been fixed in
busybox SVN (1.12.0) and tested in Emdebian.

 blindvt_ : the new busybox chpasswd now *works* yippee!
 the test command I used was:
 echo "neil:balloontest" | chpasswd
 Ctrl-D
 echo $?
 $ 1
 echo "neil:balloontest" | /tmp/busybox chpasswd
 Password for 'neil' changed
 echo $?
 $ 0
 testing with su neil; su neil shows that the first command failed to
modify the password, the second one (from SVN) works fine.
blindvt_: codehelp, ok, thus i consider this fixed. You may want to
verify if it works with 1.11.x; If not then i'm willing to backport
fixes to 1.11.x
 codehelp, and perhaps try svn trunk with the config you used
for your non-working version
 codehelp, let's play safe. Perhaps it works with 1.10.x and it is just
somehow misconfigured
 blindvt_: which revisions in SVN relate to this fix, is it
only r23046 ?
 it's too close to the Lenny release to go even to 1.11 so I'll be
looking at whether this works in 1.10.2 or simply moving Emdebian to
1.12 ahead of Debian
 Debian doesn't use the busybox chpasswd in the installer so this bug
doesn't affect Debian as-such
 testing the full config now
 codehelp, i don't know since when it was fixed. r23046 has
nothing to do with it, that one only fixed -e which is not exercised in
your example above
 ok
 codehelp, 1.10.4 should work equally well. I'd go for 1.11.1
if i was about to update, though. http://busybox.net/ has a shortlist of
changes for the respective versions
 codehelp, i'll install r23046 on the stable branch in a day or two, to
make sure it ends in the next 1.11 release, fwiw
 just so you know, the full diff between 1.10.2 chpasswd.c and
chpasswd.c in current SVN relies on other changes elsewhere because the
build breaks with that patch. Not surprising but it does mean Emdebian
will need to migrate to 1.11.1 rather than try to backport the
chpasswd.c change to 1.10.2
 codehelp, nod. I would recommend and do support going to
1.11.1 at any rate. There were numerous bugfixes and 1.11 is the current
stable release, as opposed to the 1.10.x series which is considered old
 agreed - it was only after the worksession at TCl in
Cambridge in June that Debian moved from 1.9 to 1.10 :-)
 it's not unexpected that Emdebian will need to be ahead of Debian
temporarily
 it's a pity that there are so many superfluous and long fixed
but open bugreports against busybox in various parts of debian. Makes
looking for actual bugs or wishes a bit awkward.
 and i'm not sure if i'm allowed to try to tag them as resolved. I guess
doing so would not be well received which of course doesn't help to cut
down on the number of open bugs
 with the extra encouragement from Emdebian, I'm hoping that
D-I will be willing to keep busybox up to date in future - changing
things right now is probably not achievable but certainly once Lenny is
released. You can tag any Debian bugs as "fixed-upstream" - feel free to
do so.
 resolved or closed has a different meaning - fixed-upstream indicates
that the bug submitter needs to nag the maintainer (the Debian Installer
team) to update
 codehelp, ok, i see.
 blindvt_ : I have an opportunity to get this whole thing
fixed for Lenny!
 codehelp, awesome. fore! 8)
 If you are OK with me quoting this IRC log in the bug report,
I can re-assign the existing Emdebian bug report to busybox in Debian,
make it Release-Critical (as already agreed with D-I) and get it
fixed. :-)
 codehelp, sure, please do.

So I'll re-assign this bug to busybox and raise severity to RC.

Recommended fix is to update busybox to 1.11 once this fix is
backported.

Eh, yes, but kernel-module "ath5k" is still buggy (Bug #1542: cannot get an IP

it is not about an "idea", but about using or not free software: i
think debian developers are so concerned about such policy that this
cannot even be a debate.

Yes, I am strictly confirming it. FOSS should always be chosen, whenever it is
available ! This is the main reason, why I chose the Debian distribution for

Packages getting marked not-for-us

2008-08-05 Thread John Goerzen
Hi,

I have been having what is a recurring problem:

One of the buildds will (apparently) randomly mark one of my packages
not-for-us. That despite the fact that the package built on that buildd
in the past, and there's no reason to suggest that architecture has been
excluded.

This then gets in the way of packages migrating to testing, because the
buildd had built former versions there.

This seems to happen to me most often on the s390 build daemon, and has
happened with at least 3 to 5 different packages now. (Current example
is hpodder). In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it happen elsewhere.

It seems to happen when build-deps don't get satisfied, or where there
is some problem installing the build-deps.

Back in the Old Days when I ran an Alpha buildd (years ago), things
never got automatically marked not-for-us; that happened manually.
After asking around on IRC a few weeks ago, there is no longer consensus
that's how it happens now. Does anybody know?

not-for-us needs to be set manually.

Hi!

Utility html2text, version 1.3.2a-6, with "utf8" patch was just uploaded to
experimental.
The patch allows to process UTF-8 files when '-utf8' option supplied. Input
should be in
UTF-8 and output will be in UTF-8 too.

Please test this functionality - I believe that UTF-8 support is a good feature,
especially for processing non-English documents.

Bug#493910: ITP: liblingua-stem-snowball-perl -- Perl interface to Snowball stemmers

2008-08-05 Thread Dominic Hargreaves
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Dominic Hargreaves <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: liblingua-stem-snowball-perl
  Version : 0.941
  Upstream Author : Marvin Humphrey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Lingua-Stem-Snowball/
* License : Dual GPL/Artistic, portions BSD
  Programming Lang: Perl, C
  Description : Perl interface to Snowball stemmers

Stemming reduces related words to a common root form. For instance,
"horse", "horses", and "horsing" all become "hors". Most commonly,
stemming is deployed as part of a search application, allowing searches
for a given term to match documents which contain other forms of that
term.

This module is very similar to Lingua::Stem -- however, Lingua::Stem
is pure Perl, while Lingua::Stem::Snowball is an XS module which
provides a Perl interface to the C version of the Snowball stemmers.

I try to maintain the ratio piss_I_take / piss_I_emit way, way above 1.
I agree everybody should do the same, yes.

Bug#493912: ITP: liblingua-stopwords-perl -- Stop words for several languages

2008-08-05 Thread Dominic Hargreaves
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Dominic Hargreaves <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: liblingua-stopwords-perl
  Version : 0.08
  Upstream Author : Marvin Humphrey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Lingua-StopWords/
* License : Dual GPL/Artistic
  Programming Lang: Perl
  Description : Stop words for several languages

In keyword search, it is common practice to suppress a collection of
"stopwords": words such as "the", "and", "maybe", etc. which exist in in
a large number of documents and do not tell you anything important about
any document which contains them. This module provides such "stoplists"
in several languages.

This is quite common with the s390 buildd - it tends to happen when it
appears that the package may not be useful on s390 (eg, due to apparing
to require hardware not available on s390), apparently based on the
package description.
