I don't mean to speak for the PostgreSQL package maintainers. But
postgresql-8.2 and postgresql-8.3 are different packages. So unless you
purge the postgresql-8.2 package nothing should be lost. You should not
get 8.3 installed and 8.2 purged just by doing "aptitude dist-upgrade".

Gnome-spell to use libenchant to update spell-checking abilities (especially Evolution)?

2008-05-02 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Hi,

Would someone have interest to check/discuss if Debian would/could use
libenchant instead of aspell for gnome-spell, bug #473541 [1]. It's
already being used in eg. Fedora 9 [2], and brings a multitude of
enchantments via enchant's support for eg. hunspell, voikko and other
libraries. My own interest is naturally in the Finnish spellchecking
voikko, which would tremendously improve Evolution's usability for
Finnish users (aspell-fi is next to useless and cannot be improved
much, either, because of the difficulty of the language itself).

The patch is originally from Abisource, modified by me into a dpatch.
Modified version at mentors.debian.net [3], and it works great for me.
The size of the diff comes, as can easily seen, from the fact of
having aclocal/autoconf/automake run results in the second dpatch, to
pick up the new dependencies of the first patch.

ps. similar patch available (and used by F9) for gtkspell, used by
some other programs

There are better ways to let people know that this is what you
think. This "debian-release is not the place for your business" talk
on the channel and the list is very condescending. He was asking
debian-release because of the udeb and the general importance of the
package. You could have just said that you don't have a problem with
a hijack instead of trying to educate him.

Hello,
It is a known temporary problem caused by the perl5.10 transition,
namely debconf-i18n.
http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/01/msg00220.html

It should sort itself out, once the autobuilders have rebuilt the
packages against perl-5.10, making them co-installable with the new
perl.

You can probably force an upgrade by installing debconf-english
instead of -i18n, but the resulting system probably won't be as useful
as before, since many packages would need to be uninstalled.

Yes. But after I have seen Laszlo Boszormenyi bughandling in sqlite3, I
think I actually would prefer current maintainance of gnupg.

Whatever it might have happened on those 2 bug reports, which I haven't
read, I find really annoying your public blaming behaviour. Either step

Good. I'm planning to assume that the 1.35.x releases are all
approximately API-compatible, so I'm naming the packages
libboost-foo1.35-dev. Any objection to that?

My headache now is that there are 13 -dev packages in Boost. One
(libboost1.35-dev) contains 60+ header-only libraries, while the
others each contain 1 library that happens to build a shared object.

This overhead creates a nonnegligible amount of complexity and
generates bugs (e.g. #457654, #478782). Is there any value to this
granularity? I can't see any. If there are no objections, I'm
leaning towards collapsing all the -dev packages into libboost1.35-dev
-- and rolling bcp into it, as well. I'll probably keep
libboost-python1.35-dev separate (with pyste rolled into it).

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
-Steve
