racoon and bug 372665

2007-03-04 Thread Milan P. Stanic
I'd like to discuss problem with regards to bug #372665.
Why the racoon should be started in the rcS when even ssh is not?

Yesterday I installed racoon but not configured it and on the next
reboot it blocked start-up process. I had to manually remove
/etc/rcS.d/S40racoon to boot machine.

I didn't posted bug report because of above mentioned bug (which
introduced this bad behavior, IMO) before someone who understand boot
process, shed a little more light on that problem.

I'm using runit instead of sysvinit as init process but I think that
doesn't invalidate my complaint.

The reasons should be fairly obvious from the bug. IPsec is at a much lower
level than ssh. racoon needs to come up before other network dependent
services get started.

This should not happen. What do you mean blocked the start-up process?

debian-policy: New virtual package: dict-freedict

2007-03-04 Thread Kęstutis Biliūnas
Package: debian-policy
Priority: wishlist

Hi all,

I recommend to add the virtual package "dict-freedict" to the virtual
package list. When I adopted the orphaned 'freedict' debian package,
I have replaced the 'dict-freedict' meta package with the 'dict-freedict'
virtual package (as was suggested in #205417). Now the package, which
requires at least one dictionary may depend on this virtual package,
and user not need to to install all dictionaries. So, this virtual
package actually exists since 14 Aug 2005. See:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/virtual/dict-freedict

Now the dict-servers (dictd, serpento) and dict-clients (dict, kdict,
opendict, ...) may to add this virtual package to the Recommends or
Suggests fields in the debian/control files (as it is in the package
'latrine' a long time since).

I propose to include the such entry to the virtual package list:

dict-freedict - a FreeDict dictionary, formatted for the dictionary
server and client which uses the DICT Protocol.

I am sorry, that I so long delayed to offer to add this virtual package
to the virtual package list.

Best regards,

This virtual package is privately, amongst a cooperating group of
packages, so adding it to the virtual package list is unnecessary,
I think.

BTW, I recommend to add a virtual package for a dictionary package
which provides /usr/share/dictd/{*.index,*.dict*}, such as
dict-freedict*, dict-gcide, dict-wn, dict-jargon, dict-foldoc,
dict-vera, and so on.

dictd-dict a dictionary formatted for the dictd dictionary server

The dictd package and other servers/clients may simply suggest it.

May I ask for an example of XS-Vcs-Cvs usage? What should be part of the
string here?

The same value you would put in the CVSROOT environment variable or
would pass to as a value for the -d flag.

It has been some time now since I last used CVS, so the following
example is artificial but should work for the "debian-doc" project on
cvs.debian.org:

  Xs-Vcs-Cvs: pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/debian-doc

Cheers.

After a bit of testing this method I realized that its not
really a good idea since you can't always produce a proper
patch which can apply after editing it.
So I came to the conclusion that it's maybe better to give
dpkg a configuration value to specify an external merge
program which can be launched by pressing 'm' in the
configuration dialog.

I introduced a variable called 'merge-tool' for this
(merge-tool /usr/bin/vimdiff) for example and submitted it
as wishlist bug to wnpp.

If someone wants to test it you can
find the patch on:
http://nion.modprobe.de/dpkg_allowmerge.patch

Kind regards
Nico
