announce: apt-listbugs with BTS versioning support.

2006-10-01 Thread Junichi Uekawa
Hi,

Finally, I've prepared apt-listbugs with BTS versioning support. This
is a test scenario. You are installing apt-listbugs 0.0.55, and the
BTS says there's serious bugs applicable to apt-listbugs which are
fixed in 0.0.56; your reaction should be 'I'd wait until tomorrow when
the new version hits my mirror'.

$ ls -1 /var/cache/apt/archives/apt-listbugs_0.0.55_all.deb | LC_ALL=C
./apt-listbugs apt
Reading package fields... Done
Reading package status... Done
Retrieving bug reports... Done
Parsing Found/Fixed information... Done
serious bugs of apt-listbugs (0.0.55 -> 0.0.55)
 #334697 - versioned BTS handling (Fixed: apt-listbugs/0.0.56)
 #323626 - apt-listbugs: unusable with new versioned BTS (Fixed:
apt-listbugs/0.0.56)
Summary:
 apt-listbugs(2 bugs)
Are you sure you want to install/upgrade the above packages? [Y/n/?/...]
Interrupted

In case you haven't noticed, the '' doesn't mean that the bug is
really fixed in the version you're installing, you really need to look
at the version of the fixed package.

Here's a key information in case you don't already know about it:

[bug severity] bugs of [package] ([current version] -> [package version to be
installed]) <[status of bug report]>
 [bug #] - [bug title] [(Fixed: fixed version, if it's fixed in a future
version)]

Thanks go to the debbugs team for properly implementing the versioned
bug tracking system; it's working better than I expected. It should
now be possible to run a stable system, and only see what bugs are
applicable to the version in the stable-updates (hopefully), module
any bugs I have embedded to apt-listbugs.

Wishlist features would be:

1. SOAP4R interface uses too much memory, some improvement there would
   be good.

2. version comparison using Dpkg::compare-versions is forking too much
   and is slow.

3. apt-listbugs in sarge is broken at the moment; backport?

I hope apt-listbugs as of 0.0.57 has become a useful companion to the
unstable life of Debian users.

regards,
junichi

It is confusing for sure. But the intent of the author was probably to
be a shorter funny version of MIT license.

Let's ask the author nicely. It is a xbiff derivative. I think authour
will be very likely to agree original MIT X license terms. Only his
Imakefile and xpbiff.c seems to suffer this. Other sources in the
tar-ball uses standard MIT X license.

To be nice to him, I write following in Japanese.

  Description : pgpool-II is a multi-functional middle ware for PostgreSQL
that features connection pooling, replication and load balancing functions.

pgpool-II is a multi-functional middle ware for PostgreSQL that features
connection pooling, replication and load balancing functions. pgpool-II,
on the other hand, allows multiple PostgreSQL servers (DB nodes) to be
connected, which enables queries to be executed simultaneously on all
servers. In other words, it enables "parallel query" processing. Also,
pgpool-II can be started as pgpool-I by changing configuration
parameters. pgpool-II that is executed in pgpool-I mode enables multiple
DB nodes to be connected.

change to dls in fstools

2006-10-01 Thread Stephen Samuel

This change to dls allows the option '-n' which numbers blocks
as they come out.

It allows utilities that filter the blocks to spit out block
numbers without having to run dcalc on (sometimes) thousands
of block numbers.

I'm also including the perl script bgrep3 which uses the output
of the -n option to find blocks that are probable candidates for
indirect inodes -- It only works for partitions < 64GB, but is easily
modifiable for larger partitions (to a point).

and the script idtest which tries to sort out double and triple indirect
inodes.

Re: A plan to get rid of unnecessary package dependencies

2006-10-01 Thread Peter Samuelson

[Mike Hommey]
> A first step in that direction would be to fix .la, .pc and -config

The correct fix for .la files for dynamic linking (remove all dependent
libraries, relying on the runtime linker to pull them in recursively)
does not work for static linking. Some people apparently still care
about static linking, don't ask me who or why. .pc files do not have
this limitation, as it's possible to specify two separate lists of
libraries, one only for static linking.

So, the real solution, insofar as there _are_ real solutions, is to
phase out .la files entirely. One problem is that if your .la file is
referenced within someone else's .la file, you can't remove it without
breaking their package. To eliminate _this_ problem, I suggest that
everyone add the following (or similar) to debian/rules:

binary-arch: build-arch
# [something like '$(MAKE) install DESTDIR=$(shell pwd)/debian/tmp']
#
sed -i 's:/usr/lib/lib\([^ ]*\).la:-l\1:g' debian/tmp/usr/lib/*.la

I'm not so sure I like to see another 50 RC bugs only for packages
already in etch, just for renaming apache2-common to apache2.2-common.
Is/Was that really necessary?

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that

RE: Professional Developer Wanted

2006-10-01 Thread Stephen Yorke
It means someone with a resume of Custom Linux
development...professional or their own stuff.

Mainly, we need a seasoned Linux developer. We have several seasoned
C/C++, VB, C#, .NET, Java developers (they do this day in and day out)
but no Linux folks. I am the closest we have to a linux guy and I am a
dumb @ss...the funny thing is...I am not afraid to say that I do not
know Linux that well...put me in the M$ arena though and that is a
different story. I get by on Linux and can get the job done but on a
professional level...forget it...I have done a couple of CBT's, one on
Pay Hat and one on Debian Woody...does that classify me a pro...nuh-uh.

We need a 'Pro'-fessional...not a weekend developer.

I was reading a job ad the other day (from a dentist) soliciting
excellent, wizard level skills in IT. "Must have experience using
MS-Office!"

What does "HIGH [caliber]" mean to you?

Bug#390591: ITP: libzrtpcpp -- ZRTP extension for GNU ccRTP

2006-10-01 Thread Mark Purcell
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Mark Purcell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

* Package name: libzrtpcpp
  Version : 0.9.0
  Upstream Author : Werner Dittmann <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/ccrtp/libzrtpcpp-0.9.0.tar.gz
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C++
  Description : ZRTP extension for GNU ccRTP

This package provides a library that adds support to the GNU RTP stack
for the zrtp protocol specification developed by Phil Zimmermen for
zphone. Using this package, together with GNU ccrtp (1.5.0 or later)
provides a zrtp implimentation that can be directly embedded into client
and server applications, rather than the overhead penalty of using an
external proxy such as zphone.

Experiment: orphanining some of my packages

2006-10-01 Thread Aurelien Jarno

Hi all,

As Debian^WDunc-tank experiments with funding, I have loosed motivation
to spend so much time on my packages. I have therefore decided to
experiment with orphaning a few of my packages in the hope I will have
more time to contribute to other Free Software projects.

Here is the list of packages I have orphaned in a first round, please
feel free to adopt them:

 * c-cpp-reference
 * camstream
 * myphpmoney
 * ttf-dustin (priority goes to the pkg-font team)
 * wdg-html-validator
 * xwelltris (priority goes to the pkg-games team)
 * xautomation

Bye,
Aurelien

That's a worthwile goal.

I think this is also already in the archives: To the knowing, the .app
suffix indicates that it is a Gnustep application. To everyone else,
.app is pretty much meaningless. Therefore I'd prefer if you'd use a
suffix with a less arcane meaning, like -gnustep.
