Eh, deja vu. We have yet libc5 and its toolchain around just to allow
use and compilation of ancient code. When I asked for revoming due
to an old grave bug, people answered almost the same: it's yet useful.

Maybe "slagging off" is not the right expression. Apart from the last
sentence that I don't really understand (as non-native speaker), I
could imagine that Anand was annoyed about his comments on Ubuntu that
expressed the fear that the project might fork...

Lintian test case author needed (zlib linking)

2005-07-13 Thread Florian Weimer
I'd like to encourage someone who has experience writing test cases
for Lintian to create a new one. It should scan .deb files for ELF
object files which match one of the following Perl regexps:

  /inflate ([0-9][ 0-9a-zA-Z.\-]{1,100}[0-9a-zA-Z.\-])/
  /deflate ([0-9][ 0-9a-zA-Z.\-]{1,100}[0-9a-zA-Z.\-])/

This is less elaborate than the Clamav checks, but it should be good
enough to detect bundled copies of zlib. Hopefully, this enables us
to eliminate statically linked copies of zlib early in the development
cycle.

Is anyone interested in writing such a test case, and work with the
Lintian maintainers to integreate it into the package?

Since NMUs are allowed now: Are they allowed as 0-day NMUs?
Are they "0-day NMUs after 5 days" or "5-day NMUs after 5 days"?

If people are bad at their job, even if they are volunteers, it should
not be considered unreasonable to ask them to stop doing it. On the
other hand, I agree that this was an entirely inappropriate way of
voicing this concern.

Mass bug filing for packages that FTBFS because of changes to texi2html

2005-07-13 Thread Matt Kraai
Howdy,

texi2html's behavior changed recently: if it is invoked with
-split=chapter, old versions place the HTML files in the same
directory as the documentation source, whereas new versions place the
generated files in a subdirectory.

After I'd filed a few bugs about this, Santiago Vila suggested that I
should contact d-d-a instead and allow developers a chance to fix
their packages before filing bugs.

I checked the packages that build-depend on texi2html and found that
19 of them fail because of this problem (not including the ones I've
already filed bugs against). Should I file bugs individually, post to
d-d-a, or do something else?

Leaving Debian, Orphaning firebird related packages

2005-07-13 Thread Remco Seesink
Hi All,

I have come to the conclusion that my current job and travel time
doesn't leave me enough time to do proper maintaining of debian
packages. As this situation is not likely to change soon I have decided
to give up on maintaining.

I regret to leave Debian as it has been a lot of fun to work with this
wonderful community.

I have orphaned the following packages:

ibwebadmin -- Web-based administration for the Firebird and
Interbase database

php4-interbase -- InterBase (FireBird) module for
PHP4

And I will leave the Debian Firebird
Group <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
This group is responisible for the firebird database packages.

Good luck to you all!

Cheers,

It does however infringe the original's copyright in characters,
mise-en-scene, etc., as well as a plethora of literal elements
("Nearly the same look-and-feel", per your linked page). Compare the
discussion of OpenTTD at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/05/msg00628.html . And
please keep it out of Debian; we have more than enough abandonware
clones as it is.

Description : Unit testing and web testing framework for PHP
SimpleTest is a testing framework built around test case classes. These
are written as extensions of base test case classes, each extended with
methods that actually contain test code.
 .
These tools are designed for the developer. Tests are written in the
PHP language itself The advantage of using PHP itself as the testing
language is that there are no new languages to learn, testing can start
straight away, and the developer can test any part of the code.
Basically, all parts that can be accessed by the application code can
also be accessed by the test code if they are in the same language.

What is the problem with this suggestion? Nobody is an expert at
everything. What is wrong with suggesting somebody delegate a task
that they may not want to do? Perhaps a more positive tone would help?

However, I read the article and didn't see anything negative in it. So
I don't see any need for Martin to delegate the press contact task.

Is it possible (and would it be worthwhile) to show which packages don't

There should be nothing on that page that doesn't need to be
recompiled and things that already have been would be the requested
