Bug#311069: ITP: flyway -- General aviation flight planner

* Package name: flyway
  Version : 0.4.0
Upstream Author : doug101 AT bellz DOT org
* URL : http://www.bellz.org/flyway/index.html
* License : GPLv2
Description : General aviation flight planner

Flyway allows the user to find and enter U.S. waypoints (airports,
navaids, and fixes), then it calculates courses, wind corrections, and
travel times. Information about the waypoints is provided (including
frequencies, elevation, fuel availability, and runway descriptions). The
route data can also be used to fill in an editable FAA Flight Plan form,
fetch basic weather information from the internet, and display a very
rough map.

This program is to be used for preliminary flight planning only. It is
not to be used as an official source of navigation information. The
database it uses is not guaranteed to be accurate or current (it was
labeled as current in April 2002). Also, the program itself is likely to
still contain some bugs and is not intended to be a substitute for
official flight planning information.

How to simulate apt pinning for times when sarge is stable

2005-05-28 Thread Marc Haber
Hi,

in my test chroots, I routinely pin down testing and unstable to -10,
so that packages from these distributions are only installed when
_explicitly_ requested.

This, of course clashes with sarge tests since sarge is still testing,
and no stable.

Unfortunately, the Release files don't contain a release codename, and
thus pinning on release codename is not possible.

May I ask for the reason? And if there is none like "we never did it
this way", who do I bug to include the release codename in the Release
file for future Debian versions?

Greetings
Marc

Uploading a perl module compiled with -O0

2005-05-28 Thread Enrico Zini
Hello,

I'm maintaining a swig-generated perl module (libdebtags-perl, in
experimental) which when compiled with -O2 causes the perl program to
segfault on exit (some memory gets garbled and the destructors choke).
Compiled with -O0, no problems.

I've noticed that the perl policy at "4.3. Vendor Installation" wants me
to compile with -O2. Is this segfault issue enough to have an
exception, or are there more reasons for -O2 besides performance?

If it's ok to upload with -O0, I'm now doing it like this (with CDBS):

  #!/usr/bin/make -f
  include /usr/share/cdbs/1/rules/debhelper.mk
  include /usr/share/cdbs/1/class/perlmodule.mk
  # I need -O0 or I have a segfault on exit on all programs using TagDB
  CFLAGS=-O0 -g -Wall

Should I do 'DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS = "noopt"' instead of setting CFLAGS?

Ciao,

Enrico that would like to spend his time as upstream developer of
Debtags, and has always to choke on some obscure packaging stuff

Why not ship SARGE with unrar-nonfree and provide a
virtualpackage "unrar" which point to the renamed one ?

SARGE $USER are using now "unrar-nonfree" and in

Hosting for DebBlue (Set of themes for Debian)

2005-05-28 Thread Jaap Haitsma

Hi,

DebBlue is a set of themes for Debian. It contains a grub splash,
bootsplash, gdm theme, gnome-splash screen and a desktop background. I'm
the creator of the themes. And some of the themes are now by default in
Debian sarge :-) If I'm correct the background, gdm theme and the gnome
splash screen

Andreas Mueller (a debian developer) has been so kind to setup
http://debblue.debian.net (I guess all debian developers can setup these
addresses) and host the data on a server which some hosting provider
gave him for free.

The hosting provider now decided without any notice not to host debblue
anymore :-(. Andreas told me that who couldn't help me out with other
hosting.

Is there somebody else who can help me out. The website needs about 15MB
of space and needs PHP.

Thanks,

Jaap

A game of skill and reflexes, non violent, suitable for all ages. The idea

of the game is the built-in map editor, so anybody can make their own maps.

Good. That is what I wanted to do, but I wasn't sure how it would go
over. Second question, how do handle the version numbering? Increment
only the Debian part of the version and include the GTK2 patch as a
Debian patch? Patch the original source and sort of make my own "new
upstream release" and increment that main version number?

Also, should I plan this bing uploaded to unstable or experimental?

I wouldn't touch the upstream version unless you're really taking over
upstream maintenance... is your upstream dead ?

Including the patch in the debian diff is quite common nowadays. You can
always use a build system that applies patches at build time rather than
patching by hand before generating the .deb ... those system let you
quickly add/remove patches.

You can check for example how I did it in libdbdpg-perl (I borrowed it
from someone else).

> Also, should I plan this bing uploaded to unstable or experimental?

It depends... I'd wait a few fays until sarge is released and then
upload it to unstable. (Uploading right now probably wouldn't hurt since
it's not a library but ... if you discover a RC bug for sarge, then
you're forced to use t-p-u)

... and if that isn't possible (e.g., you're packaging something which
will go into non-free), then you need to use a wrapper script.

I think that you can have a look at TuxFamily (www.tuxfamily.org).
TuxFamily is a french host for free projects. It provides a lot of services
(web, php, mysql, postgresql, cvs, mail, mailing-lists, dns) for free.
You can subscribe at https://panel.tuxfamily.org/subscribe.pl , then create a
project, and a web space in your project. Any requests for a service need to
be moderated, but I think that there won't be any problems for you ;-).

As far as I know it is hidden deep into synaptic, but I don't know if
the support is currently broken or not. Also there is a cool search
application called "packagesearch" which integrates debtags, apt-cache
and apt-file search -- this one is written by me :-)

I was unable to find debedit, are you speaking about debtags-edit? I am
not sure if it is still beta, but it is under development by Enrico. And
the version number suggests that it is not stable yet.
Note that Enrico will hold a talk about debtags at the Debconf.

pdns-server testing

2005-05-28 Thread Alex Owen
Hi,

Saw your request for pdns-server testing... I took a copy of the package
(pdns-server_2.9.17-13_i386.deb) from
http://www.cacholong.nl/~matthijs/pdns

Looking at the postinst you now ship
   /etc/powerdns/pdns.conf
and
   /etc/default/pdns
in
   /usr/share/pdns-server/
and use ucf to install them under /etc

This seems ok as far as it goes but you still seem to ship
/etc/powerdns/pdns.d/pdns.local as a conffile and then the function
"splitconfig" seems to update that file without asking.

Later (after the two ucf calls) you then edit /etc/powerdns/pdns.conf and
/etc/default/pdns I'm not sure that editing these files in this manner
is compliant with section 10.7 of policy...
Mind you I'm not a Debian Developer!

Perhaps you could copy the /usr/share/pdns-server/ files to temporary
files... do your fancy editing on those temporary files then use ucf to
copy the temporary files into place?

As I say I'm not a Debian Developer so feel free to ignore me if I'm
poking my nose in wher it is not wanted!

AFAIK the -O2 recommendation is primarily because it's a reasonable default
optimization level for software; packages frequently use -O0 on one
architecture or another to work around toolchain bugs.

But it doesn't sound like what you have here is a toolchain bug, it sounds
like you have a source bug that manifests differently under different
optimization levels. Could you please try to debug the memory error instead
of working around it? You may find valgrind useful for this.

Hi Steve and Roberto,
I noticed that Roberto as a new contributer was unsure as to wheather to
keep using gtk 1.x or to move his app to 2.x. Is there any refernce for
say RELEASES as to what libraries are to be transitioned to a certain
version? I recall seeing RC issues about libmysql being mentioned. Was
there somewhere someone could have gone to read about what version was
expected to be used in SARGE and thus would have been able to better
plan a tranistion for his/her app? Is this just 'general knowledge' in
Debian, to any app developer or would this be good to have listsed as a
design goal for a release (on the website)?
Just curious.

It's usually a pretty safe bet that the newest version of the library
present in both testing and unstable is the one to use. Other than that, if
you have questions about which to use you probably want to talk to the
library maintainers about their plans.

fixed package for vrms

2005-05-28 Thread Rogério Brito
Package: vrms
Version: 1.9-0.1
Followup-For: Bug #302504

Hi.

Seeing the lack of activity in this package, I went and fixed some of the
bugs in this package. I have uploaded a new version of it to
.

Please, see the .changes file to know what I fixed/broke. :-)

Oh, BTW, this is meant as a hot-fix. In particular, it only "fixes" the
problem with people seeing "(pur)" by changing the number of lines to 5
from the former 4.

I judged that the proper fix (seeing if the package is actually installed
or not, independent of the number of lines it occupies in the status file)
would be too intrusive for just a hot fix.

I would like to implement other options for this package and also to fix
some other bugs, but I am not a DD. :-(

Can anybody upload this package to the repository?

Thank you very much, Rogério Brito.

Debian kernels

2005-05-28 Thread Russell Coker
The current Debian kernels have SE Linux compiled in, but not in a form that
is usable.

The option CONFIG_AUDIT needs to be enabled to allow SE Linux access denials
to be logged, without this it is impossible to use SE Linux. While making
such changes enabling the option CONFIG_AUDITSYSCALL would be useful, this
enables auditing of the system calls performed by applications. Using this
requires the auditd package to be installed (*).

http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/code/download5.cfm

There is also a patch to 2.6.11 that changes the checks for executable memory
which is needed to make a Debian SE Linux system usable. It's available at
the above URL and should be in 2.6.12. It would be good if this patch could
be included into a Debian 2.6.11 kernel package to enable testing and
development of SE Linux on Debian.

(*) I don't have time to take on another package at the moment. But I would
be happy to help someone who wants to package auditd.

It's Sarge, and Etch. Please don't yell at our releases.

No, that's not true.

The "general" package is there for people who don't understand all the
details of how a Debian system really works, but still want to report
their bug somehow. Or, perhaps, for people that get confused by the
complexity and the amount of available packages in the Debian BTS.
"reportbug" offers to file a bug against "general" "if you're unsure",
and that's a good idea.

After all, we want bugreports from people who are not very familiar with
Debian (yet), too -- or, dare I say, "especially?" -- because those will
help us improve the system's usability. Flaming on them isn't going to
improve the number of those.
