update-menus and similar programs
update-menus forks to the background and waits for dpkg to finish before continuing to work. This is a useful function that could be useful for other programs (for instance scripts that build automated indexes of other kinds). Is there a cunning way to achieve this at present? If not, is there any reason why I *shouldn't* file a wishlist item against dpkg (apart from the fact that it will be lost amongst the other few hundred bug reports!) too many directories in /usr/doc?
Section 2.1.6 of the policy states: Every package must be accompanied by a verbatim copy of its copyright and distribution license in the file /usr/doc//copyright (see section 5.6, Copyright information' for details). I'm taking over maintaining the linux-gazette packages from Christian Schwarz, and I would prefer to just have /usr/doc/lg/copyright, rather than having one in each /usr/doc/lg-issueXX directory. There will not be anything else in /usr/doc/lg-issueXX as the issues are installed in /usr/doc/lg. This seems the most reasonable to me, as it saves having sixteen directories. I've just looked at the X stuff and it has loads of directories, each with a copyright file in it. Hmmm. Priorities before hamm release
Hi. After RedHat 5.0 got released we noticably increased reatre of package conversion and this is extremely good. The sooner hamm is relesed the better. But we might consider other opprtunities to *increase* our "market share" in current situation. The problem with RH 5.0 is that there are not that many commercial and even pre-compiled free applications and development environments for libc6 nowdays. This will change but not immediately. Users encoutered with this might consider falling back to some libc5-based distribution for some time. And *up to date* Debian 1.3.1 could very well be the distribution of choice. But only *if* we provide updated versions of the packages. Can't we finally decide that the creation of this "libc5-updates" directory has higher priority *now* than putting some order with hamm uploads. Developers are anyway accustomed to download new packages directly from Incoming. What do you think about asking Guy to put that on top of his list? Thanks. Is there a version of dpkg-ftp that fixes bug #10792 ? (The symptom is that dpkg-ftp prepends dist/ instead of the correct path to the files it's trying to download.) RFC: Deb 2.0 testing process
Hello everyone, The testers are starting to think about how to organized the 2.0 testing effort. One idea that the testers seemed to like is to create a checklist for checking each package. Before we just checked to see if the packages installed and if the entire system seemed to work correctly. This time we plan on being a bit more thurough, but it will require a bit of help from the developers. What I would like to do is keep a list of checklist for all the packages in a format similar to the packages.gz file. I'd like to create the initial checklist from what the maintainers advice. I don't expect it to be complicated, e.g. Package: xbiff (assuming there is a package for this single binary) Checklist: - by default it checks the users mailbox - switches display, geometry, file, update, volume, bg, fg, rv, and shape work This list can be added to by anyone. What I'd like to ask for now is any comments on this. Please do NOT send any checklist at this time. After a few weeks, I'll post a request for the list, and inform everyone of the final decision. I'd say this is an understatement, and you should definitely install e2fsprogsg. Preferably before rebooting the system. I found this out the hard way; compiled a new kernel, tried to reboot, couldn't because fsck was missing. No real problem; e2fslibsg was present, so I just had to get /sbin/fsck on diskette from another system. Re: be careful with Replaces, please
It occurs to me that one avenue for a safe upgrade to hamm might be a jumbo-package. This would basically be a hand crafted .deb that contained (and provides) all the relevant sensitive packages. The downside is that this approach is laborious to implement. The upside is that this approach solves all the problems introduced by the current many-packages implementation of debian. I think I ran into this too. In package cgoban, the Makefile.in contains the following line: CFLAGS = @CFLAGS@ $(INCS) The result is that if I override CFLAGS when I invoke make, I lose $(INCS), which is a series of -I flags. I got around the problem by replacing that line with the following two lines: CDEBUGOPTS = @CFLAGS@ CFLAGS = $(CDEBUGOPTS) $(INCS) Then I invoke make with CDEBUGOPTS="-O2 -g". It is possible that the Makefile.in in your package already contains a variable that performs a role similar to the CDEBUGOPTS I added to cgoban. bugs...
I tried to file these at www.debian.org, but the server said that the bug tracking page was an unknown URL (it seems to be other URLs, too, like the packages page.) I tried the german mirror but the timestamp said Oct 31 so I decided to send a mail to the list and find out what's going on. since I've nowhere else to mention them, I'll list them quickly. The xbase (3.3.1-2) failed postinst. The section: test -L /usr/include/X11 && rm -f /usr/include/X11 if [ -d /usr/include/X11 ] then cd /usr/include/X11 cp -a * /usr/X11R6/include/X11 cd .. rm -rf X11 fi seems to be at fault. My /usr/include/X11 was empty, so the cp failed and the postinst broke. Not hard to test for. Next, sed (2.05-18) has this annoying tendancy to say Electric Fence 2.0.5 Copyright (C) 1987-1995 Bruce Perens. everytime it starts up. Really ugly when my xterms all have this at the top due to stuff in my rc's: Electric Fence 2.0.5 Copyright (C) 1987-1995 Bruce Perens. Electric Fence 2.0.5 Copyright (C) 1987-1995 Bruce Perens. Debian GNU/Linux Logo chosen
We've been having a logo contest for a long time. It failed to generate a consensus on a logo for the project. It got to the point where people were clamoring for me to hire a commercial artist and get the job done. I went over the candidates in the logo contest, and found one that was probably as good as what I would have gotten after spending money on a commercial artist. The logo I chose is http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-logo/profile/si02.html specifically the color one with the blue eye. This is the logo of "Debian GNU/Linux". Any future Debian system we do with the Hurd would obviously have a different logo. We could still use a logo for Software in the Public Interest. I chose this logo because it is a simple, easily recognized image, it emphasizes the Linux connection while it is also definitely different from the Linux penguin, it's easily trademarked, and it has esthetic merit. We need some more artistic treatements of this logo - different sizes (for example one for a CD jacket), different type, use of the image in various contexts, etc. My thanks to all of the artists who submitted logos. There was great creativity, and I'm sorry that we could not use all of them! Many Thanks Bruce Perens Debian Project Leader -- Can you get your operating system fixed when you need it? I know i should install a new e2fsprogs, obviously. I was just suggesting we should find some way to avoid the default action being to deinstall packages that aren't really being completely replaced. I'm not sure what better to do though. Incidentally, the g suffix on packages indicates they're a libc6 package. Usually it's only needed on libraries since you might want both libc6 based and libc5 based libraries installed at the same time. Usually we don't care about having two versions of binary packages installed simultaneously. I'm not exactly sure why we have both e2fsprogs and e2fsprogsg, possibly because e2fsprogs are so essential that we're being paranoid about future libc6 bugs. greg -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
