Bug#4454: Distribution: unstable' but it goes into project/experimental
On Mon, 9 Sep 1996, Ian Jackson wrote: > When I uploaded debiandoc-sgml 1.0.5 the .changes file below was > included. As you can see it said `Distribution: unstable'. I will move debiandoc-sgml, but dinstall's behavior was correct. The override files instructed dinstall to put debiandoc-sgml into experimental, overriding what was in the .changes file. This problem will recur whenever a package moves from one section or distribution to another. dinstall cannot handle this case because it doesn't know where to look for the older version to unlink it. Instead it assumes that the .changes file listed incorrect sections and distributions (a fairly frequent occurrence actually), and installs the package into the old location. Since package movements are much more rare than .changes files with incorrect locations, dinstall's assumption is the right one. dinstall could, alternatively, require human intervention in this case. But it was written to run as automatically as possible. It will make a recoverable error, which is usually the right thing to do, rather than do nothing at all. A third alternative is to turn the `Override file lists section as ... overriding your choice of ...' message into an error, so the package would get rejected. But this is illogical as it would require MORE intervention: maintainers would be forced to reupload new .changes files and the distribution maintainer would still have to edit the override file. So I would like to close this bug, as it's not a bug. Of couse, you may be able to suggest a fourth alternative which is better. Guy PS - I can't seem to log in to master right now, but I'll move debiandoc-sgml when I can.
Bug#4457: popclient conflicts with netstd
Package: popclient, netstd Version: 3.05-1, 2.07-1 The netstd package provides popclient 2.21, and the popclient package provides popclient 3.05. These two versions aren't completely compatable. Neither package conflicts with the other, yet both provide /usr/bin/popclient, /usr/man/man.1/popclient.1, and /usr/doc/copyright/popclient. Dselect is still configured to automatically override conflicts like this, so when I installed the popclient package, I had to modify my scripts, and when I installed a new version of the netstd package, I had to remodify my scripts. Suggestions: 1) Remove popclient from netstd, or 2) Update the popclient in netstd and eliminate the separate package. -- Buddha Buck [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Just as the strength of the Internet is chaos, so the strength of our liberty depends upon the chaos and cacaphony of the unfettered speech the First Amendment protects." -- A.L.A. v. There are a few outstanding bugs on the fortune package, some dating back over a year, that could easily be fixed by a repackaging. It will be easy to distinguish between announces of new releases and announces of new packages or changes, and I'm not sure there's room/need for two separate newsgroups. Also (but here I'm less sure) why not have debian.admin instead of debian.install? If I understand it, debian.tech is for developers only despite its more open name, and debian.nontech does not look like a place where to discuss technical administration issues because of its name. I understand too that the aim is to have people starting installing/administering a Debian system find a place where to ask their questions. But will they really be answered if the group is only read by people who installs first or volunteers wanting to help (which may not do that all their time)? I think if the group discusses administration stuff in general, including first-time installation, people asking for help on this installation process will certainly find more help; in addition they will also be able to monitor the group for administration problems that interest them (for example printing, PPP, dial on demand, etc.) as first-time or long-time users. Bug#4465: security hole in netdiag package
Package: netdiag Version: 0.2-3 The postinst script copies the tcpdump binary from the tcpdump package and the traceroute binary from the netstd package to /usr/bin and makes them setuid root.adm. This allows all users in the existing adm group to use tcpdump to get the unencrypted passwords that are transmitted over the network. IMHO the netdiag package shouldn't use tcpdump/traceroute (neither as binaries nor as links). Copying/linking binaries from other packages just to have them in /usr/bin is a bad idea. Maybe something like this should be added to the guidelines. Alright I tried all the ideas I had. What shall I do to get consistency with network diagnostic tools that should be be in the hads of troublemakers? I know the adm group is not the right one. Bug#4466: NE2000 clone not detected
The NE2000 driver is in a module. Use the "modconf" tool to configure it, or "modprobe ne io=0x", where is the I/O bus address of the card in hex. You might be able to make it work without the "io=" part, I wasn't sure if that is possible or not from a glance at the driver source. We couldn't fit all of the devices in one kernel and still have it boot on a 4MB system. Thus, almost all network card drivers are modules. Thanks Bruce

Excuse my French, but that is bullshit. He had six months to do an Elf release when our guidelines were unchanged. Moreover, both formats are currently allowed, you he could use the old one if need be. Aout needs to be extinguished soon rather than later. -- Dirk Eddelb"uttel http://qed.econ.queensu.ca/~edd
