Filenames passed to a shell by most are not properly escaped:

Bug#4454: Distribution: unstable' but it goes into project/experimental

I will move debiandoc-sgml, but dinstall's behavior was correct.

The override files instructed dinstall to put debiandoc-sgml into
experimental, overriding what was in the .changes file.

This problem will recur whenever a package moves from one section or
distribution to another. dinstall cannot handle this case because it
doesn't know where to look for the older version to unlink it.

Instead it assumes that the .changes file listed incorrect sections and
distributions (a fairly frequent occurrence actually), and installs the
package into the old location. Since package movements are much more
rare than .changes files with incorrect locations, dinstall's assumption
is the right one.

dinstall could, alternatively, require human intervention in this case.
But it was written to run as automatically as possible. It will make a
recoverable error, which is usually the right thing to do, rather than
do nothing at all.

A third alternative is to turn the `Override file lists section as
... overriding your choice of ...' message into an error, so the package
would get rejected. But this is illogical as it would require MORE
intervention: maintainers would be forced to reupload new .changes
files and the distribution maintainer would still have to edit the
override file.

So I would like to close this bug, as it's not a bug. Of couse, you
may be able to suggest a fourth alternative which is better.

Guy

PS - I can't seem to log in to master right now, but I'll move
debiandoc-sgml when I can.

Bug#4457: popclient conflicts with netstd

1996-09-10 Thread Buddha Buck
Package: popclient, netstd
Version: 3.05-1, 2.07-1

The netstd package provides popclient 2.21, and the popclient package
provides popclient 3.05. These two versions aren't completely
compatable.

Neither package conflicts with the other, yet both provide
/usr/bin/popclient, /usr/man/man.1/popclient.1, and
/usr/doc/copyright/popclient.

Dselect is still configured to automatically override conflicts like
this, so when I installed the popclient package, I had to modify my
scripts, and when I installed a new version of the netstd package, I
had to remodify my scripts.

Suggestions:

1) Remove popclient from netstd, or
2) Update the popclient in netstd and eliminate the separate package.

The executable should be recompiled. There are a few outstanding bugs on the
fortune package, some dating back over a year, that could easily be fixed by a
repackaging. I could be wrong, but it seems as if the maintainer has abandoned
it.

I will not, as mirror maintainer, change this. IMHO doo_deletes is not
important enough to warrant questions in the postinst. The mirror package
requires local finetuning. Life's too short to take care of everything.

I'll remove it from the netstd package. There is one open bug report

I may say something stupid, in which case please excuse me, but: could
not debian.announce and debian.changes be merged? It will be easy to
distinguish between announces of new releases and announces of new
packages or changes, and I'm not sure there's room/need for two
separate newsgroups.

Also (but here I'm less sure) why not have debian.admin instead of
debian.install? If I understand it, debian.tech is for developers only
despite its more open name, and debian.nontech does not look like a
place where to discuss technical administration issues because of its
name. I understand too that the aim is to have people starting
installing/administering a Debian system find a place where to ask
their questions. But will they really be answered if the group is
only read by people who installs first or volunteers wanting to help
(which may not do that all their time)? I think if the group discusses
administration stuff in general, including first-time installation,
people asking for help on this installation process will certainly
find more help; in addition they will also be able to monitor the
group for administration problems that interest them (for example
printing, PPP, dial on demand, etc.) as first-time or long-time users.

Yves.

Bug#4463: fspd uses incorrect file location

1996-09-10 Thread Michael Meskes
Package: fsp
Version: 2.71-4

The distribution fspd uses /var/tmp as cache dir. According to FSSTND
/var/tmp is for 'temporary files, used to keep /tmp small'. However, the
contents files of fspd cached here are not temporary. Unless the archive
changes these files will remain unchanged all the time. If it changes the
files are recreated. I suggest to use a dir under /var/lib instead.

That sounds good... However, please -DON'T- mark popclient as Replaces:
netstd. As far as I understand, Replaces should only be used when one package
completely replaces another's functionality, and I don't thing popclient
replaces all of netstd.

Bug#4465: security hole in netdiag package

1996-09-10 Thread Peter Tobias
Package: netdiag
Version: 0.2-3

The postinst script copies the tcpdump binary from the tcpdump
package and the traceroute binary from the netstd package to /usr/bin
and makes them setuid root.adm. This allows all users in the existing
adm group to use tcpdump to get the unencrypted passwords that are
transmitted over the network.

IMHO the netdiag package shouldn't use tcpdump/traceroute
(neither as binaries nor as links). Copying/linking binaries from
other packages just to have them in /usr/bin is a bad idea. Maybe
something like this should be added to the guidelines.

Alright I tried all the ideas I had. What shall I do to get consistency
with network diagnostic tools that should be be in the hads of
troublemakers?

I know the adm group is not the right one. Shall I try to set up a new
group of users being able to use network diagnostics?

tcpdump and traceroute are essential network diagnostic tools. Somehow
they need to fit into the scheme. Before the netdiag package I manually
changed permissions on all machine I installed because our administrative
staff is doing troubleshooting on campus quite frequently.

Please respond by cc to me since I dont have access to debian-devel.

1996-09-10 Thread Heiko Schlittermann
Hello you out there,

for you in Europe, using chiark as relay to master.debian.org ... since
the procedure of uploading to Incoming and moving to ../queue is
somewhat error prone, I've written a little perl script (using
ftp.pl and lchat.pl from the mirror package) to do this
for me.

If somebody is interested in, please mail me.

Features:

* using *.changes file to determine the files to be
  uploaded
* checking the md5 sums before starting further processing
* logging of uploads (preventing duplicated uploads)
* moving around on the ftp server, if necessary
* sending mail to debian-changes after
  completed upload of every package

Bugs:
* not too smart about several directories (for now you'll
have to put the files (*.changes, *.diff.gz, *.deb, ...)
into the directory where you'll fire up `upload'
* not too (to none) smart about locating the *ftp.pl and
*chat.pl modules. (Will be fixed soon.)

Dale> Ian, how do you do this? Anybody?

Just Use the 822-date Ian provides with dpkg:

I'd rather use the emacs changelog mode, though.

Coolness! Works fine! Was I supposed to see this in the docs somewhere?

Thanks,

Bug#4466: NE2000 clone not detected

1996-09-10 Thread Bruce Perens
The NE2000 driver is in a module. Use the "modconf" tool to configure it,
or "modprobe ne io=0x", where is the I/O bus address of the card
in hex. You might be able to make it work without the "io=" part, I wasn't
sure if that is possible or not from a glance at the driver source.

We couldn't fit all of the devices in one kernel and still have it boot on
a 4MB system. Thus, almost all network card drivers are modules.

Thanks

Bruce

Bug#4467: dpkg-deb fails to build package

1996-09-10 Thread Karl Sackett
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.3.14

When I try to build a package dpkg-deb complains:

mycroft# dpkg --build debian/tmp-dev ..
dpkg-deb: building package `libtclobjc-dev' in
`../libtclobjc-dev_1.1b3-1_i386.deb'.
dpkg-deb: unable to create
`../libtclobjc-dev_1.1b3-1_i386.ddebian/tmp-dev/DEBIAN/conffiles': No such file
or directory

If I give dpkg a specific file for output it works fine:

mycroft# dpkg --build debian/tmp-dev ../foo
dpkg-deb: building package `libtclobjc-dev' in `../foo'.
mycroft# dpkg --build debian/tmp-dev foo
dpkg-deb: building package `libtclobjc-dev' in `foo'.

It's entirely your business what you do on the machines that you admin.

But you are plain WRONG to move binaries from other Debian packages around.
Please don't do that. And Peter is right --- this has to go into the
Guidelines.

I thought it meant the package replaced files in netstd. If not, what
*should* I be using?

The package maintainer's guide on www.debian.org doesn't seem to cover
Replaces: at all.

Bug#4466: NE2000 clone not detected

(This isn't CC'd to the bug database, just a question)

You are loading the module for the ne2000 after the system has booted havent
you? I don't think we 'auto-detect' anything anymore so as to save space on
the installation floppies. If you load the ne2000 module from the menu what
happens? My SMC Elite 16C Ultra card doesnt get detected at bootup when I
installed Debian 1.1.6 to test the distribution - I loaded the module and it
found it fine.

Hope that helps.

That's not true. Replaces should be used whenever one package
overwrites files from another. See the dpkg programmer's manual for
details.

In this case, popclient should use
Replaces: netstd (<= 2.07-1)
assuming that future versions of netstd will not include popclient.

I did so - shouldn't the runtime version depend on elf-x11r6lib?

DEBIAN/control:

Package: xforms
Version: 0.81-3
Architecture: m68k
Depends: libc5 (>= 5.2.18)

Excuse my French, but that is bullshit.

He had six months to do an Elf release when our guidelines were unchanged.
Moreover, both formats are currently allowed, you he could use the old one if
need be.

Aout needs to be extinguished soon rather than later.
