Hmmm... can you send the output of 'ldd /usr/bin/perl' to debian-devel?
I suspect that you don't have libc or libc4 installed, which contains
libdb, which is needed by your perl binary (since it doesn't use
dynamic loading). 

Darren, can you please release an a.out perl that uses dynamic loading?

maintainer can take over.

I have some good news and some bad news.  The ncurses developers have
added support for ELF shared libs, including assigning version
numbers, to the main distribution.  Unfortunately, they haven't shown
a strong commitement to maintaining binary comptaibility.  The major
version number has already changed once.
