I don't think that it is the same issue, because it appears last year 
for me.
On debian stable i386, scanbuttond use scanimage and i have randomly 
segfault from scanimage.

Bug#700701: exifer lib

The problem is coming from the exif module.

On the gallery forum, i got the advice to update the exifer lib and now 
it works fine.

Attached exifer (v1.7) to extract in 
/usr/share/gallery2/modules/exif/lib/ directory.
