Bug#625877: Problems of using the beta driver, as I use the nvidia-kernel-dkms
Hi all, I reported the same bug here http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=629513 asking for the upload of the beta driver to experimental, as I use the nvidia-kernel-dkms system and even if I try to remove the relevant packages the beta driver directly from Nvidia would not install. Having several machines affected, when the beta driver is going to hit experimental? Or if that's not happening in a few hours, how can I help and package this driver? Or, worst case scenario, how can I install the Nvidia beta having used the nvidia-kernel-dkms before? Bug#625877: Problems of using the beta driver, as I use the nvidia-kernel-dkms
Thanks for your answer. The nvidia-kernel-dkms with the correction were uploaded to the repository yesterday, and now I can confirm that with the nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-glx packages from experimental (275.09.04) KDE is very pleased :-). Everything seems to be working fine - resizing konsole, and so on - and I feel it a little bit faster too. Bug#551387: Bug#xxxxx: Please check whether your bug exists with 2.12.0-1+ickle2
I wanted to compile up another module but couldn't find the 2.6.34 source for some reason, so I installed the 2.6.35-rc5 and the source for that... Only xorg doesn't work with that release, thought/hope you'd be interested... the kernel log including oops (which looks to be xorg related) are attached. Regards, M 2.6.35-rc5 Description: Binary data

Bug#612759: No bug!
Dear all, After kernel 2.6.38-2 got into sid, I switched the kernel to the debian kernel and voilá, the cdrom drive works. Put my kernel back - with deprecated sysfs compiled - and the problem is back. So thanks for that! It is working now with the stock debian kernel. Bug#612759: Kernel updated, still no cdrom
While this bug is not solved I can use the cdrom drive changing the permissions by hand. It's just an annoyance to do that. I'll create the 80-drivers.rules and generate the debug log. Problem turned out to be faulty memory. Please see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30637 The others I raised with different issues were possibly also this problem: 599223 590282. Bug#552182: Checking the file system if it's read-only
Hi there, It seems that one cause for the behavior that you've described is your file system being mounted as read-only. This happened to me a few times after a power surge, or a forced reboot. Maybe is completely unrelated to X or the nv or nvidia driver. Just in case, please reboot your machine and boot on the safe kernel - usually the second option on grub. Then run manually a fsck on your disk. After that, just issue a mount -a and reboot. The next time your system reboots, your file system should be read-write, and everything should be back to normal. Hi, I know I wasn't on the list for testing this release but I'm monitoring this package. I tested with the modeset=0 and it does indeed so far seem to improve things for my bug 551387 I note that xv - video is unsupported now (see below) but I think I'd prefer to live with that than the frequent/regular crashes that made the other releases totally unusable. I've only tested for a few minutes but without the modeset option/earlier release it died as soon as I start up firefox before. Bug#625877: Problems of using the beta driver, as I use the nvidia-kernel-dkms
Hi, Understood, not gonna do it. I have a suggestion to prevent this deluge of bug reports against libgl1-mesa-dri, and this kind of changes in general: it would be lovely to receive the possible breaks _before_ updating the package, so one would not update, and avoid breaking the package, having to fill a bug report, seeing that there are tons of it, and them scramble to fix it. A webpage, a wiki, forum, whatever, would be great. The package changelog usually contains this information, but 95% of the time that the package is updated the change is small or there are no breakages. I know sid and it can break sometimes, and I'm ok with that; I'm just suggesting that knowing about the break beforehand would be very useful. I had to dig a blog post of a debian developer - http://blog.mraw.org/2011/06/18/mesa_a_disturbance_in_the_Force/ - to have an explanation and a possible fix. If the guy is already a debian developer, why not post this on somewhere high profile, maybe even debian.org, so one would know what's happening? If there is a way to do that, please be kind and point me there so I can RTFM. Otherwise, where is the best place to suggest that? debian-user? debian-devel? Thanks. 2011/6/16 Andreas Beckmann : > On 2011-06-16 14:47, M. wrote: >> Thanks. >> >> I was just finishing writing a bug report against libgl1-mesa-dri. Package: kwin-wayland Version: 4:5.23.2-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, After resuming from suspend, only a black screen and a cursor is shown. Bug#343583: kernel-source-2.4.27: kernel-source and kernel-image version out of sync for Sparc
Package: kernel-source-2.4.27 Version: 2.4.27-10sarge1 Severity: serious Justification: no longer builds from source -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: sparc (sparc64) Kernel: Linux 2.4.27-2-sparc64 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Hello, When attempting to make some small modifications to the Sparc kernel, in general, one runs into problems making it, because the version of the available source code does not match the available image version. Installed image and source via dselect: kernel-image-2.4.27-2-sparc64_2.4.27-9sarge1_sparc.deb kernel-source-2.4.27_2.4.27-10sarge1_all.deb I could not find matching pairs of them using in ftp.debian.org either. Challanged though, I've first made a kernel image using the config-2.4.27 file which was placed in /boot (during install of Sarge, it's now put there, which is ok!). I compiled like explained in http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/sparc/ch08s04.html.en. After dpkg -i, It showed my kernel and the original kernel differed. I found out the config files of the source (in /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.27/arch/sparc64) and image (in /boot) differed. Apart from that, I think the source code itself is different too, at least the version numbers differ... I did not succeed running this kernel by the way, because system halted after rebooting (Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:01), but that's a problem to be posted somewhere else. Solution for the image/source version difference would be to synchronize the two. It's an easy fix, and I think a lot of users would benefit from. Thanks! Bug#335216: Move getopt to /bin?
The logical resolution to this bug (Debian #335216, /lib/lsb/init-functions uses getopt to parse arguments, requiring /usr to be mounted) seems to be to move getopt into /bin. I agree. ldd shows that getopt doesn't require any libs from /usr. So, moving it to /bin would make things easier (than trying to implement the functionality in sh code or something else). )(- Luis Mondesi System Administrator Kiskeyix.org "We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on" -- Steve Jobs in an interview for MacWorld Magazine 2004-Feb No .doc: http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.es.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#310243: hard drive was culprit. please closed
I put the hard drive into a new, trusted, x86-based system using a 2.6.12-rc6 kernel and lo and behold. The same error happens after about 15gb of data copied to the disk. This proves that the hard drive is bad. This is a less than a year old drive that was working fine up to the point that I transfer it to the Mac. Somewhere along that line, something caused the drive to die. Who knows why. I'm not sure if the problem is because the drive is bad (which could be), a limitation of the Mac's BIOS (after 19GB of data it gets corrupted) or what. I believe that I have rule out the possibility that XFS had anything to do with it. This is because I have reformatted the drive using various other filesystems (I even wrote zeros to the whole drive usind dd and /dev/zero and then reformatted the drive using badblocks and ext3). No matter what I did, the drive always went back to be corrupted after writing a given number of gigs (copying UTF8 encoded filenames from another Macintosh running MacOS X. I'm not sure if this is why this happens). I have since removed the drive from the computer. I'll put it back in a x86 system and see if it works. That way I will rule out whether it's the drive that has problems or the BIOS of the Powerpc system that has limitations. Though that drive is 40GB an there is already another 40GB drive in that same computer (this was set as a slave in the same IDE bus). Feel free to lower this bug report's level to "low" or less until I can find out what the problem is -- )(- Luis M System Administrator Kiskeyix.org "We think basically you watch television to turn your brain off, and you work on your computer when you want to turn your brain on" -- Steve Jobs in an interview for MacWorld Magazine 2004-Feb No .doc: http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/no-word-attachments.es.html

I'm guessing that sshd will work by checking your password, by itself, from /etc/passwd. But most of us with other systems for authentication, say pam_mysql, pam_ldap, just to name a few. Those won't be able to login to the system. So, these two options are related, but they are not the same. However, I'm with you in that a Note should exist in the Debian README file saying that pam_unix in /etc/pam.d/ssh with authenticate against /etc/passwd also. So, if you want to disable password authentication completely, you must set UsePAM to no, as well as the older method of authentication. For some reason this sounds to me like an obvious thing to know (especially by experienced sysadmins). For example, template1=# create database test; CREATE DATABASE template1=# \c test You are now connected to database "test". test=# CREATE SCHEMA ts; CREATE SCHEMA test=# SET search_path=ts,public; SET test=# create table ts.test(); CREATE TABLE test=# create table public.test(); CREATE TABLE test=# \d List of relations Schema | Name | Type | Owner +--+---+-- ts | test | table | postgres (1 row) test=# set search_path=public; SET test=# \d List of relations Schema | Name | Type | Owner +--+---+-- public | test | table | postgres (1 row) It should list all relations on the search_path which includes public.ts and test.ts - Adam -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_CA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages postgresql-client depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.4.49 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.13.2 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-21 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libkrb531.3.6-3 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libpam0g0.76-22 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpq3 7.4.7-6 PostgreSQL C client library ii libreadline44.3-15 GNU readline and history libraries ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7e-3 SSL shared libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4compression library - runtime -- debconf information: postgresql-client/missing-postgresql.env: true -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I do not see any benefit in hiding relations in a given schema. After all, the summary displays which schema a given relation is in. - Adam

Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: "Adam M." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * Package name: dhcpv6 Version : 0.10 Upstream Author : ?? Not a single one - many... * URL : http://dhcpv6.sourceforge.net/ * License : Mostly BSD, some LGPL and MIT/X Description : a stateful address autoconfiguration protocol for IPv6 DHCPv6 is a stateful address autoconfiguration protocol for IPv6, a counterpart to IPv6 stateless address autoconfiguration protocol. It can either be used independently or it can coexist with its counterpart protocol. This protocol uses client/server mode of operation but can also provide support through a Relay Agent. Current upstream does not appear to be very active. I'm not yet certain whether I will make this a Debian package or Upstrea/Debian patch. This depends on how much of the code can be replaced by current libc functionality. I should get this package done within a month (so by mid-June) since I will be doing some code reviewing and not just packaging. - Adam -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_CA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Well, probably 2 or 3 binary packages from one source. But yes, s/protocol/{server,client,relay}/ in the one line description. This long description should probably only be used for the server and the client/relay have more terse long descriptions of what they do, not a description of what DHCPv6 protocol is. - Adam

I don't think there is one. The sources do have a dhcp6relay.c, but that is not compiled. The relay agent is in the TODO list. I guess the Relay Agent should have been lowercase! - Adam

Its author wants to package his software for Debian. Well, I just DL dibbler. The source code is C++, while dhcpv6 is C only. The source code for dibbler is much, much larger than dhcpv6. Dibbler also seems it wants to be a stateless server, like radvd in addition to DHCPv6 server. The last revision of dibbler seems to be in December 2004. The last revision of dhcpv6 is about a year ago. >From the sources, Dibbler seems to have a linux, windows 2k and xp ports. dhcpv6 is more for the BSD environment only. I don't know. I really think that maybe it would be best of dibbler AND dhcpv6 were packaged separately. It seems these two packages are complimentary, like Apache and webfs. Also, I do not think dibbler's client could ever be part of base due to its size. The upstream tarball contains the dibbler-client at about 1 meg. - Adam
Bug#308855: Privilege escalation in ELF core dump (fs/binfmt_elf.c)
Package: kernel-source-2.6.8 Version: 2.6.8-15 Severity: critical Tags: security patch >From Secunia advisory http://secunia.com/advisories/15341/ DESCRIPTION: Paul Starzetz has reported a vulnerability in the Linux kernel, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. The vulnerability is caused due to a signedness error in the Linux ELF binary format loader's core dump function (elf_core_dump()) and can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via a specially crafted ELF binary. Successful exploitation makes it possible to gain root privileges and execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The vulnerability has been reported in versions 2.2 through 2.2.27-rc2, versions 2.4 through 2.4.31-pre1, and versions 2.6 through 2.6.12-rc4. Bug#308855: reassign
reassign 308855 kernel thanks I probably shoud reassign this to the kernel pseudo-package since it applies to ALL of the kernels.. According to iSec, there is a quick workaround for the problem, "A hotfix for this vulnerability is to disallow processes to drop core. This can be accomplished by setting the hard core size limit for users to 0 (e.g. ulimit -H -c 0, man limits.conf)." - Adam

Bug#254565: 254565 additional info
I don't know the bug tracking system well, forgive me if this is sent wrong :) I just want to add to this that it doesn't seem to have anything to do with having an LCD, as people seem to be assuming. I have the same problem on a CRT. It also doesn't seem to have anything to do with the industrial theme per say, as I am using the gtk2step theme, which is based on the pixmap engine. It also seems not to be specific to a particular mouse theme. I tried (with the update-alternatives command that someone mentioned in the bug tracking) switching to other themes, such as redglass.theme, and still got the second pointer. Thanks for the tip about using update-alternatives to switch off the mouse theme. Once I switched to core.theme everything was back to normal, and I never liked those funny white mouse pointers anyhow! Bug#305951: Can't be fixed...
tag 305951 + wontfix thanks >From devices.txt file in Linux directory, Sockets and pipes Non-transient sockets and named pipes may exist in /dev. Common entries are: /dev/printersocket lpd local socket /dev/logsocket syslog local socket /dev/gpmdatasocket gpm mouse multiplexer So /dev should not be read-only. You can have it on a tmp file system or something, but if you require printing, it should not be read-only. I cannot modify lpd to set the socket elsewhere because lpr/lpq/lprm et al. rely on the socket to be /dev/printer. lpr doesn't use config files, only switches so it is to leave socket patch as a compile time option. If you wish to change it, you can just change it in common_source/pathnames.h and then recompile lpr with `fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage`. The package is very small and doesn't have any build depends so this should be trivial. - Adam

Bug#307663: PostgreSQL Character Conversion and tsearch2 Module Vulnerabilities
Package: postgresql Severity: grave Tags: security sarge From: http://secunia.com/advisories/15217/ Workarounds (aka, fixes :) http://www.postgresql.org/about/news.315 DESCRIPTION: Two vulnerabilities have been reported in PostgreSQL, which can be exploited by malicious users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or potentially gain escalated privileges. 1) Missing validation of arguments supplied to the functions supporting client-to-server character set conversion can be exploited by unprivileged users when calling the functions from SQL commands. The vulnerability affects versions 7.3.* through 8.0.*. 2) The contrib/tsearch2 module misdeclares the return type of several functions, which breaks the type safety of "internal". The impact has reportedly not been investigated, but can at least crash the backend. The vulnerability affects versions 7.4 and later with the contrib/tsearch2 module installed. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-1-k7 Locale: LANG=en_CA.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_CA.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages postgresql depends on: ii adduser 3.63Add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf 1.4.48 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.13.2 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii dpkg 1.10.27 Package maintenance system for Deb ii libc62.3.2.ds1-21GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcomerr2 1.37-2 common error description library ii libkrb53 1.3.6-3 MIT Kerberos runtime libraries ii libpam0g 0.76-22 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libperl5.8 5.8.4-8 Shared Perl library ii libpq3 7.4.7-5 PostgreSQL C client library ii libreadline4 4.3-15 GNU readline and history libraries ii libssl0.9.7 0.9.7e-3SSL shared libraries ii mailx1:8.1.2-0.20040524cvs-4 A simple mail user agent ii postgresql-clien 7.4.7-5 front-end programs for PostgreSQL ii procps 1:3.2.5-1 /proc file system utilities ii python2.32.3.5-2 An interactive high-level object-o ii ucf 1.18Update Configuration File: preserv ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4 compression library - runtime -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
