[Bug binutils/782] objdump not working for target rs6000-aix

2005-03-09 Thread bje at sources dot redhat dot com

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2005-03-10
00:01 ---
I built a copy of binutils like so:
  ~/source/src/configure --target=rs6000-aix && make all-binutils

and ran objdump directly from the build directory like so:
  ./binutils/objdump -d foo.o

It worked.

There is nothing here to suggest a problem with binutils, but more likely, a

These aren't pseudo-ops as such. These are part of the assembly language syntax
which is not normally documented in the GAS manual for each target. This
documentation can be obtained elsewhere. However, you may submit a patch. :-)

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-03-28

The problem here is that you are using the -M option to GCC. I don't know what
this option's meaning is for Microsoft's compiler, but for GCC, it means:

`-M'
 Instead of outputting the result of preprocessing, output a rule
 suitable for `make' describing the dependencies of the main source
 file. The preprocessor outputs one `make' rule containing the
 object file name for that source file, a colon, and the names of
 all the included files, including those coming from `-include' or
 `-imacros' command line options.

Closing.

objdump is behaving correctly.

It sounds like you want the --file-start-context option:

  `--file-start-context'
 Specify that when displaying interlisted source code/disassembly
 (assumes `-S') from a file that has not yet been displayed, extend
 the context to the start of the file.

When this option is omitted (as you were doing), the default is to show five
previous lines from a file that has not been displayed before. When I use the
option, I see:

-- snip --
Disassembly of section .text:

 :

typedef struct {
  int a;
  int b;
  int c;
  int d;
  int f;
  int g;
  } s;

int main (void){
   0:   c0 e0   ldi r28, 0x00   ; 0

[Bug binutils/1259] windres does crash while converting res to coff

2006-03-28 Thread bje at sources dot redhat dot com

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-03-29
02:19 ---
I don't think this patch is correct. The allocated d->data is not overrun by
the code in res_to_bin_accelerator:

  put_16 (big_endian,
  a->flags | (a->next != NULL ? 0 : ACC_LAST),
  d->data);
  put_16 (big_endian, a->key, d->data + 2);
  put_16 (big_endian, a->id, d->data + 4);
  put_16 (big_endian, 0, d->data + 6);

Are you sure this is where your observed crash is occuring? Can you please post
a backtrace?

[Bug binutils/1298] m68k-dis.c:1348: warning: argument 'info' might be clobbered by 'longjmp' or 'vfork'

2006-03-28 Thread bje at sources dot redhat dot com

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-03-29
05:25 ---
The warning does not indicate a bug, as the indirect return to the setjmp site
leads to an early return -- the `info' parameter is never used.

  if (setjmp (priv.bailout) != 0)
/* Error return.  */
return -1;

The question now is how to eliminate the warning.

I think this has already been fixed. Moreover, there has been no response from

Thanks for your patch -- and to think of archiving your discussion in the bug
tracking system!

I think it is worth proposing that it be incorporated into the mainline tree,
however for a patch of this size that adds a new feature, it will be necessary
to complete FSF paperwork. You should send the patch to binutils@ and see where
it goes from there.

[Bug gas/983] gas/ld .info doc's built in src/doc, not bld/doc directory if specifed.

2006-03-29 Thread bje at sources dot redhat dot com

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-03-30

gas and ld use Automake-generated Makefiles. These build the Info documentation
within the source tree so that the Info documentation is present when a
distribution is prepared. GNU conventions are that users are shipped the Info
documentation without an expectation that they will have Texinfo installed to
build it themselves.

If you feel strongly that this is wrong, Automake is the place to fix it.

I have examined the problem more extensively. The problem exists up to Texinfo
version 4.3 (and point releases of 4.3). Texinfo 4.4 adds the necessary support
for @include @value and is now the minimum required version.

Texinfo 4.2 was released on 1 April 2002.
Texinfo 4.3 was released on 14 November 2002.
Texinfo 4.4 was released in 31 January 2003.

I think that raising the minimum requirement on Texinfo to version 4.4 is quite
safe. I will submit a patch.

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-03-31

The right way to specify tool specific variables is to put them in the
RUNTESTFLAGS variable (relevant section of the runtest man page is shown below).

 ``Makefile style variables are used to specify tool names and their flags;
 these and other configuration dependent values are saved in the file
 site.exp, created during configuration.''

Alternatively, you can add lines like these to your site.exp:

set CC_FOR_TARGET mygcc
set CFLAGS_FOR_TARGET -W

Note that the variables you are thinking of are not called CC and CFLAGS in the
test framework.  They're called CC_FOR_TARGET and CFLAGS_FOR_TARGET.

Sorry for taking so long to respond!

This patch suggests that you are trying to make the disassembler's output
suitable for input back into the assembler, correct? This is not normally
something that the disassembler strives for.

What are you trying to do?

Can you attach some example binaries, please? It does not make sense that
x86-64 binaries produced by a modern version of GCC would produce stabs
debugging info. I suspect your debugging session has given you that impression,
but that it would not be the case. Thanks.

[Bug binutils/149] configure incorrectly assumes presence of gettext implies presence of msgfmt

2006-04-05 Thread bje at sources dot redhat dot com

--- Additional Comments From bje at sources dot redhat dot com 2006-04-06

It is true that binutils releases do not require maintainer tools like msgfmt.
It is only a requirement when building using snapshots from CVS. I don't think
it's unreasonable to require developers to properly install the suite of gettext
utilities.

On my Debian GNU/Linux system, msgfmt is packaged in the "gettext" package and
gettext is packaged in "gettext-base". I have them both installed.

I don't think you should have to install readline Cygwin packages to get these
utilities -- who would guess that? I notice, however, that the Cygwin package
list (at http://cygwin.com/packages) mentions "gettext" and "gettext-devel"
packages. You might like to investigate installing these instead.

It's not worth the effort to write a man page as dllwrap is deprecated. You
should not use it for any new code. Use ld --shared instead. If you'd like to
contribute a small placeholder man page that repeats what I've said, patches are
welcome. :-)
