[Bug ld/3972] New: linker is broken on FC6/x86-64

After the support for Toshiba MeP is checked in, linker is broken on
FC6/x86-64. I got

tmpdir/mainp.o: invalid string offset 4294967295 >= 837 for section `.strtab'
FAIL: visibility (hidden_normal) (PIC main)
/export/build/gnu/binutils-lrb/build-x86_64-linux/ld/tmpdir/ld/ld:
tmpdir/mainp.o: invalid string offset 9511952 >= 421 for section `.strtab'
/export/build/gnu/binutils-lrb/build-x86_64-linux/ld/tmpdir/ld/ld:

FAIL: shared (PIC main)

It doesn't happen on ia32 nor RHEL4. It may be sensitive to gcc version.
FC6 has gcc 4.1 and RHEL4 has gcc 3.4.
