This is more a wishlist than a bug, but:
There were a few users looking for an option to disable xsplash (bug
#439284), and since xsplash is started by gdm, this seems to be a gdm
issue.

Deinstalling nvidia-common, rebooting and installing it again, then
rebooting again solved the issue for me.
