I use the following procedure to install gcc on RHEL4-Machines:
tar xvjf gcc-4.1.1.tar.bz2
mkdir gcc-4.1.1-build
cd gcc-4.1.1-build

By checking older compiler versions I found:
snapshots gcc-4.2-20060819 and before are working,

I'm not planning to back-port this to 4.1.
A 4.1 fix couldn't include the new methods, for binary compatibility.
But it could include the one hunk for the comparison, which would
suffice.

__trampoline_setup in /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 puts code on the stack.
This contributes to insecurity on powerpc.
A half-way fix is to mmap a page for this evil crud.
