Another option for those on Windows, if you don't want to dual boot, is the 
VMWare Player (http://www.vmware.com/support/product-support/player/). Download 
and install that, then download and run any of a large selection of Linux 
virtual appliances. I have complied 1.5svn in a Fedora 13 virtual appliance 
with no problem, following the instructions listed on the wiki page linked to 
by a.l.e. There are slackware, openSuse, and Ubuntu appliances available, 
although I can't say anything about them as I've never installed any of them.

I have also put Fedora 13 on a USB drive using liveusb-creator 
(https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/) and installed Scribus on that. 
Although in this case I installed 1.3.7, compiling 1.5svn should work there, as 
well.

Running Fedora either of these ways is going to be slower than running directly 
from a hard drive but you don't need a separate partition. Nor do you need to 
make any changes to your boot record. They are pretty handy options for getting 
your feet wet with Linux or just trying something out.
