I am on FreeBSD, using rxvt-unicode-256color terminal outside of screen 4.9.1, inside my TERM is set to "screen" and LANG to pl_PL.UTF-8 and I seem to be getting \u2520 (encoded UTF-8: "┠") without any problems, both locally as well on a similar remote host connected via ssh. Marcin
