I cannot explain the technical details but putting termcapinfo xterm ti@:te@ termcapinfo xterm-color ti@:te@ termcapinfo xterm-256color ti@:te@ in ~/.screenrc enables this behaviour in screen at least for KDE's konsole. CU Hauke
