Sorry, a line like this should work better:  

hardstatus string '%{= kG}%-Lw%{= kW}%-30> %n*%f %t%{= kG}%+Lw%< %{= kG}%-=%D 
%m/%d/%y,%C:%s %A,%1`%{-}'


The "%-30" setting then reserves 30 characters to the right.
