Do you mean something like this: 

$ ssh u...@host
$ screen -S $HOSTNAME
$ screen -S $HOSTNAME -X hardstatus alwayslastline "Hello World!"
$ screen -S ..           <other screen command> ...

And this is not working in your case..??
