Hi Roger, sorry this response is so long past your original post. The patch you provided doesn't work for me; I used a config file with: hardstatus alwayslastline "γρεεκ" ;) but it still displayed garbled for me, even with the patch. I suppose maybe it was intended only for hardstatus values received via escape sequences? However, even if it had worked, I don't think it would have done the right thing with multiple displays with varying encodings (say, one with UTF-8, another with ISO 8859-7). That's important for screen, and is a large part of the reason that Micha stated that a proper fix would not be simple.
