I believe that they did them manually one-by-one.
Let's say you downloaded and installed the Merida TrueType font.
Open gimp and create a new image of 1920x160 pixel with transparent 
background.
Using the text-tool:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-text.html
-select "chess merida" as font
-select 160 as size
-write "pnbrqkomvtwl"
and you'll see that the appropriate images are created.
Then you can save the image as Merida1_160.gif
However for a better looking result you may want to save the image as 
Merida1_160.png (and maybe blur the borders).
