One of this is the database format number (400 from 4.* scid versions) and if the number stored in the file is greater than 400 you get that error message. Usually this means that the file is corrupted (it's strange that the file can be opened with the 4.3: there was no change in the database format between 4.3->4.4). The faster way to recover the games is to open the file with 4.3 version, create a new empty database and copy to it all the game. The new database should open without errors with the 4.4 version.
