I have the same problem as this user:

I've installed as many X11*-dev packages and xorg packages as I can think of.
My
problem is identical to the user referenced at the link above. The ./configure
fails with the same message and produces a generic Makefile.
Has someone figured out what has been removed from Ubuntu 11.04 that makes this
normally automatic compile break?
