I download, compile, patch, etc at some place (cvs calls it a sandbox, I 
always
have a few in parallel), and build and run it there, by simply by entering

$ ./configure
$ make
$ ./scid

If I want to play with the distro version, I would need to enter

$ scid

since I do not have "." (up front) in my path env.

The trick is _not_ to $make install

the scid script that you effectively call expects external binaries in 
the same spot as itself.
so you could do better than I do using scripts in your ~/bin as well.

And - as we say in dutch - a kid can do the laundry.
