Hi,

I've compiled a database of ~950k games from sources such as TWIC.

I see that ~ 6000 games are of zero length (no moves listed).

Is this normal? How does this happen? I'd have guessed that maybe a player forfeits for some reason, but some of the games are listed as draws. Can both players forfeit?!

Hi.

These games are probably Bye games. In swiss tournaments they occur with odd number of players (and are won by default). In weekend tournaments, players can often take a bye round. These players are rewarded a draw result.
And sometimes a result between two players is, indeed, pre-arranged...

For your dBase, these games serve no purpose, unless you want to produce complete tournament tables from it. With correct standings, that is.

Cheers,
Joost.

Thanks,

Mark
