Actually, I did a short intro in the online help for the tree window.
See section "Using a Mask file to configure display".
The basic idea of a mask is to have a way to add comments to a position
or move instead of a given point in a specific game. Ie. mask
commentaries are available in the tree regardless which game is
displayed at the moment. This comes in very handy in the opening e.g.
