Hi,

After installing tcl/tk 8.5 in Ubuntu Linux 8.04LTS I succeeded in compiling
Scid 3.7.3 on my machine. Everything seems to be running ok until I try to
load a chess engine. Here is what happens:

First, I click on the "stop/start engine analysis" icon. I get a choice of
Toga II 1.3.4, Scidlet and Crafty.

If I choose Toga I get the following message:

*The analysis engine terminated without warning; it probably crashed or had
an internal error*. A short look at the running processes (top, or ps -A)
confirms that the toga engine is not running.

If I choose Crafty I get the following message:

*Error: window name "fdockanalysisWin1 already exi...*. If I click on
"Details>>" I can "Save to Log" which records the following data:

window name "fdockanalysisWin1" already exists in parent
window name "fdockanalysisWin1" already exists in parent
    while executing
"frame $f  -container 1"
    (procedure "::createToplevel" line 7)
    invoked from within
"::createToplevel $w"
    (procedure "makeAnalysisWin" line 92)
    invoked from within
"makeAnalysisWin"
    invoked from within
".main.tb.engine invoke"
    ("uplevel" body line 1)
    invoked from within
"uplevel #0 [list $w invoke]"
    (procedure "tk::ButtonUp" line 22)
    invoked from within
"tk::ButtonUp .main.tb.engine"
    (command bound to event)

If I choose Scidlet I get the same message.

The weird thing is that if I press "F2" is I get a window with Crafty
running and analyzing. Even stranger is that when I press F3 another
windows with Crafty again opens. I have been unable to get Toga into the 2nd
window. But if I press F2 again, I suddenly get Scidlet.

I get a feeling that this mess is caused by the toga+polyglot combination.
So, just in case, here are the default setting I have for the toga engine:

Name: Toga II 1.3.4
Command: /usr/games/polyglot
Parameters: /usr/games/toga2
Directory: /home/andrei/.scid

I thought that Scid 3.7.3 fully integrates polyglot, is that not so?

I should mention that I complied Scid with the commands "./configure" and
"make" (no errors), but I did not do a "make install" because I have kept my
old version of Scid on my computer (3.6.1) and I did not want to over-write
anything. So I run Scid 3.7.3 in a separate Scid directory. Could it be
that my old polyglot (for which I never succeeded in writing a config file)
is messing things up?

The engine I REALLY want to get running for analysis is Toga.

How can I fix that?

Thanks,

Andrei
