In comment #6 to _groff_ bug #66332, I included in my email the name of the
bug submitter, which is "наб" (Cyrillic letters). The mail->gateway
appears to have scrubbed these characters out before populating the comment.
Ideally, they'd be supported. As a fallback, replacing them with "?" or
Unicode replacement characters (U+FFFD) would do a better job of informing the
reader that the content of the comment had been altered or was somehow
malformed.
