The primary reason I joined this thread is that I remember an older
report in bugzilla about similar issues with KDE: someone reported
that loading iptables would slow down KDE. I was suprised to see
such a topic on this list. I haven't experienced anything like that
before, and I couldn't explain it. What does your set of rules look
like? When your rules are loaded, does the CPU start burning a lot
of cycles in system space? Anything you can track down with
"procinfo" or a graphical tool like "xosview"? Instead of flushing
all rules at once, you should be able to add/remove individual rules
one by one and find out when the problem appears/disappears.
