The easy way around it (I say this because it's how I got around it), is 
to load the ide-scsi module.

By loading just the ide-scsi module, "cdrecord -scanbus" recognizes the 
IDE CD drive as a SCSI CD Drive...if it's the only CD drive in your 
system, you should be able to access it as "/dev/scd0".
