I've tried all of those steps, but it still won't work.  I even get an
error when attempting to open GMix that says, "I was not able to open
your audio device.  Please check that you have permission to pen
/dev/mixer and make sure that you have sound support compiled into your
kernel."  The permissions are correct and sound support is there.

I'm lost, but not yet discouraged.  It was so easy to get this working
the first time that I'm sure there is just some minor detail that I am
overlooking.

    Be sure that after compiling/installing alsa, you run the snddevices
    script that comes with alsa.
    
    Do a 'modprobe snd-via8xxx' and then run alsactl (alsa mutes everything
    by default).
