I'm using a Promise RAID controller on my home system with 6 drives. I wanted to try it before I put it on a lot of other systems. I haven't had any problems with it, but it does take Promise a long time to get new drivers out. The latest version of RedHat I can use is 7.2. I've been using it since December of last year and have had no problems at all, but then I haven't had any drives die and it's not a server getting pounded on all day long.On Wed, 2002-12-18 at 17:52, nate wrote:Really? I haven't had the fun of playing with any IDE HW Raid devices.. But do you have LOTS of experiences with this? Or is it just a few cases? I am curious because I am considering purchasing some Promise HW IDE RAID arrays that have SCSI Host Interfaces? They just seem so damn cheap.
I don't think I would use it in a production sytem just because Promise is so slow to get the drivers updated, plus I have a real bias towards SCSI drives. In the last 8 years of building servers and systems I've only had one SCSI drive fail early and it failed after only 4 years :-). My precpition has been (no hard data to back it up) is that IDE drives are not as good as they once were no matter who makes them.
