Linux setup on a laptop

All,   I have an old IBM Thinkpad laptop that I would want to put linux on it. The problem comes in that it has no cd – rom and under windows it will not recognize the pcmcia network card if some one could tell me a linux version that will run on it with a small install size and how to do it, that would be great thank you     Christopher Hoffman THIS SPACE FOR RENT Please contact me for work.
