I've had prob's with OpenGL based screen savers with some Video cards,
I just picked "blankscreen" as the screen saver and then it worked fine.
See if the non-OpenGL screensavers work.  If they do, then try running
an X-windows Open_GL application like glxgears, or run glxinfo.
