Such machines work great as ip masquerade boxes.
A 386 will work fine as a ipchains box.  I might recommend 6.2 instead of 
6.0, though.  You can get installation cookbooks/configuration scripts for 
6.0 and 6.2 from:  http://www-jerry.oit.duke.edu

Another option for an older, smaller machine might be LRP (Linux Router 
Project).  It's designed to boot from one floppy and run from a RAM disk, 
one of those "skinny" linuxes:   http://www.linuxrouter.org

On 386's yes, but not on this 386 without adding more memory.
6.2 only required 16MB to do the installation.  I'm assuming he doesn't 
have the memory on the 386.  

The nice thing about 7.3 is that it's easier to keep UP2DATE than a 6.2 
box.  (Easier to set up as a rhn client).  Keeping updated is important to 
keep from getting cracked.
