If you are willing to pay some $$, there is applixware.  I think
corel office is available for free for linux (used to be, anyway).. 
There is also staroffice (or is that what corel calls it now?)  These
all have a spreadsheet program, similar to excel.

Does anybody know of a plotting program other than gnuplot.

Unfortunately it looks like gnuplot will not do what I need.

I am trying to create a bar graph with the x labels being names
instead of
numbers.  The output needs to go to a standard graphic format i.e
png, jpg
