Check that NIC, if it is a BroadCom 52xx Gigabit controller 
that may be the source of your problems.

Check the Compaq website, don't they have a mailing list for
linux on Compaq's?  I use mostly Dell's here, and they have
a mailing list that is *GREAT*.  

The few Compaq's I have here
haven't given me any problems, (except power supplies that 
die like clockwork.) but they aren't the new G2 stuff.
I would use Compaq except that they are
pretty expensive and I couldn't stand the Compaq support teams
I used to deal with 8 years ago, and they still seem to be 
pretty strict about *EVERYTHING* is Compaq or nothing is.
